SHUMENOV OUTPOINTS BJ FLORES

PhilBoxing.com

Las Vegas, NV. - Two fight cards were going on at this City tonight, one at Events Center of the Mandalay Bay featuring Sergey Kovalev vs. Nadjib Mohammedi promoted by Main Events and shown on HBO and the other involving Beibut Shumenov against B.J. Thomas promoted by Mayweather Promotions and televised on NBCSportsNetwork.

In paper the Mandalay event holds a bigger name and if one is an ordinary boxing fan, chances are the will go to this fight rather than go to the Palms Casino to see fighters of lesser names.

Basing on the main events of both fight cards, for the money, the smaller fight was more worth it. I say this because the Kovalev-Mohammedi fight was a mismatch from the start. Poor Nadjib didn?t have a prayer to beat Kovalev. Other than money, I would not know why he even accepted a fight he knows he will lose. True enough, he was disposed off in 3 short rounds.

Om the other hand, the Shumenov-Flores fight was more even. Therefore, it was a fight the whole night with each fighters landing on each other although Shumenov landed more.

Shumenov showing great improvements from the fighter that lost his title to Bernard Hopkins, won the fight simply by scoring more punches. They may not have been as hard as those landed by Flores, but certainly he outworked the slugger from Arizona.

Shumenov started accumulating points from the beginning and coasted at the last two rounds which almost cost him the fight. Flores tagged him in the last seconds of round 12 that buckled his knees but it was too late to change the fight results.

Shumenov mimicked the fighting style by his promoter, Floyd Mayweather Jr towards the end of the fight. He used the whole ring avoiding the sometimes wild swings of Flores. He run just like his promoter when he sensed that he was ahead and the fight was in the bag.

A few in the crowd didn?t like what he did in the last two rounds but as he said at the post fight interview - ?Boxing is an art. You use your skills, your hands and footwork to out work your opponent.? That is exactly what he did and he won in the eyes of the judges.

Shumenow won identical scores from the three judges, 116-112. With his victory, he now improves his record to 16-2-0, 10KO) while Flores drops to 31-2-1, 20 KO.
