UNITY IN BOXING By Danny Leigh PhilBoxing.com Tue, 29 May 2007 THE ULTIMATE BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS, ONE POWER, ONE RANKINGS, ONE CHAMP. THE POWERS IN BOXING SHOULD TAKE CONTROL OR PASS IT ON...A LEGITIMATE BOXING GOVERNING BODY NEEDS TO BE ESTABLISHED. If Don King, Bob Arum and Oscar DeLa Hoya can put their past behind them, and work together in boxing, world Peace might be around the corner and Armageddon is only a balance for positive and negative to move forward. The clock is ticking and the next generation of fight fans don't even consider boxing the ultimate fight game. Who can blame the public for turning away from boxing? This is the only sport where the participants decide who they will accept challenges from and truly believe their own self proclaimed greatness as a fact. The days of boxing fans being forced to sit through a deceitful poker game between promoters and sanctioning bodies deciding whether the best possible match up is made or what ever they can maintain control of is served up, has got to go. The day has come for boxing to evolve and reach its full potential as a sport that matches the best fighters from around the world for every corner of the globe to see who the number one gladiator on earth is. The UFC Ultimate Fighting Championships proves that blood sports aren't prehistoric or fading in popularity. The well organised evenly matched mixed martial arts fights of the UFC prove that people only want to see the best v the best. Even though UFC doesn't have the history boxing does, it also doesn't have the scars and the ever growing fan base is a credit to the organizers. There are enough well informed boxing writers around the world to band together and help reform boxing. Real knows Real, so an elected body of boxing experts from around the world would be able to establish an official boxing website and using a similar concept to the BCS College Football Rankings in America. Boxing experts can poll their votes with computer generated rankings like boxrec.com, to establish what will eventually become a singular official World Boxing Ranking. Current World Title sanctioning bodies are the perfect stepping stone to stardom and would probably grow in stature. Big Sponsors like Emirates Airlines might eventually put $100,000,000 on the table like they do with other legitimate world sports. Big fights like Manny Pacquiao v Juan Manuel Marquez and Floyd Mayweather Jnr. v Shane Mosley would already be scheduled and allocated to HBO or Showtime if the UFC concept was adopted by boxing.
