NBA opens Live, Learn and Play Zone in Oakland By Adeline Deladisma PhilBoxing.com Sun, 07 Jun 2015 OAKLAND -- Community leaders, NBA officials, and members of the Western Conference Champion Golden State Warriors gathered at the Boys and Girls Club of Oakland's Ossian E. Carr Clubhouse on Saturday (Sunday Manila time) to celebrate the opening of the latest Live, Learn & Play Zone. As has been the case for the past number of years, the NBA through NBA Cares has sponsored the development of Live, Learn & Play Zones in the communities represented by their teams in the NBA Finals. The event was attended by the Mayor of Oakland, the Honorable Libby Schaaf, as well as corporate and local sponsors of the event. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver offered a few words to the gathering of kids who were awed by the presence of their basketball heroes who were "close enough to touch." Silver encouraged the kids to study and work hard: "Not every one of you is going to be able to play defense like Draymond Green, or dunk like Harrison Barnes. But like these players, every one of you can work hard, every one of you can be dedicated to what you do, every one of you can show respect for each other." After the ribbon cutting, local kids matched up in ping pong against Golden State and NBA All-Defensive First Team forward Draymond Green, played NBA 2K15 with Warriors guard Shaun Livingston, and shared story time with head coach Steve Kerr. Warriors forward Harrison Barnes recalled growing up going to the Boys and Girls Club in his hometown and has been involved with the Boys and Girls Clubs in the Bay Area since his rookie season, offering tickets to Warriors home games and donating backpacks and school supplies. And as a Club member, he is proud to be able to give back. "I actually grew up in the Boys and Girls Club when I was your guys' age. This was a place that was a safe haven for me. It was a place I could play basketball, a place I could hang out with my friends. And it was a place that helped me a lot academically, with my homework and all that kind of stuff. Fast forward ten years later and I'm fortunate enough to be a board member at the Boys and Girls Club and to be able to give back to you guys. I hope all you guys have the same experience I had and I hope you guys really take advantage of this, because this is really special. It's a safe environment where you guys can better yourself as students, as athletes, and as people?. I wouldn't be the person I am today without the Boys and Girls Club." NBA Cares will celebrate the opening of another Live, Learn & Play Zone in Cleveland, when The Finals moves to the home of the Cavaliers next week.
