Capiz's veteran woodpushers join the Touchmove rapid chess By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Fri, 15 Aug 2025 The renowned chess players from the province of Capiz will showcase their impressive skills in the 4th edition of the Touchmove Invitational Open Rapid Chess Tournament, to be held at the atrium of SM City in Roxas City on August 24. The tournament will feature a seven-round Swiss format, with each round allowing 15 minutes of game time and an additional 3-second increment for each move. Among the vintage chess players aiming for a respectable finish in the upcoming tournament are John Lester Cadelina, a member of the faculty at Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion (CPC), and Allan Tutica of Cal's Poultry Supply, who is also a champion from the 3rd edition of Touchmove. Francisco Lamayo Jr. from Mambusao, Capiz, and a member of the Department of Education (DepEd), is recognized as the first Capiznon champion when the chess tournament took place inside the Mall in 2000. Engineer Anthony Arcangeles, a government employee in the office of the City Engineers in Roxas City, was a perennial regional competitor during his prime. Felixberto Baguyo Jr., who works for the Metro Roxas Water District (MRWD), was the inaugural champion of the Touchmove. Lamayo, Arcangeles, and Baguyo participated on four boards in the 2010 Inter-Cities and Province Chess Tournament as members of the Capiz team. This homegrown team achieved an impressive 8th place, which is the highest finish ever recorded by Capiz in a national chess tournament. They competed alongside Aivan Delgado and National Master Francis Jocson. "This will be the most exciting and prestigious tournament ever to take place on the island of Panay, particularly in the province of Capiz," Lamayo stated. "On August 24, 2025, Prepare to witness a thrilling showdown among the nation’s leading thinkers at the atrium of SM City in Roxas City," said sportsman Eduardo Basilonia.
