2015 NBA Finals -- Warriors outlast Cavs in Game 1 OT thriller, 108-100 By Adeline Deladisma PhilBoxing.com Sat, 06 Jun 2015 OAKLAND -- "Warriors!! Warriors!!!" The excitement surrounding Game 1 of the NBA Finals permeated the air. A capacity crowd of 19,596 came to witness Golden State's first trip to the Finals since they won it all 40 years ago. Dub Nation came out in full force and they were rewarded with a 108-100 overtime victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. This version of the NBA Finals features two teams with little Finals experience. The first match ended with the reigning MVP, Golden State point guard Stephen Curry, beating out Cleveland's four-time MVP LeBron James. The Cavs came out of the gates strong, outscoring the Warriors 29-19 and outrebounding them 17-9 in the opening quarter. They built their lead with help from an uncharacteristic 27 percent shooting performance by the home team. The Warriors mounted a comeback in the second quarter behind Curry. Cleveland kept the lead at the half 51-48, after having led by as many as 14. Golden State kept at it steadily and took the lead at 10:43 in the fourth. After 11 ties and 13 lead changes, four quarter weren't enough and regulation ended at 98 apiece. The Warriors then ramped up their effort, closing out the Cavaliers 10-2 in extra session. The Cavs did not score until the final seconds of the game, fittingly by James, who carried his team with a 44 point effort. Cleveland guard Kyrie Irving added 23 points before leaving the game after an apparent injury, which had him limping off of the court during the overtime period. The Warriors were led by Curry, who had 26 points and 8 assists. Klay Thompson had a strong 21 point performance in his return from a concussion suffered in the last game of the Western Conference Finals. The 7-day respite between games seemed to benefit Thompson, who logged nearly 39 minutes of playing time. The biggest boost for Golden State came from veteran guard-forward Andre Iguodala, who drew the task of defending James. He came off the bench and added 15 points in addition to keeping a body on James. Of his effort, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said, "I thought he was fantastic. Andre is one of the smartest defenders I've ever seen. I mean, he understands angles, he understands where everybody is on the floor. You know, it's funny to say when a guy gets 44 points that the defender did a really good job, but I thought Andre did extremely well." The Warriors will continue the defense of their homecourt when these two teams square off in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday (Monday AM in Manila) at Oracle Arena.
