"K.O. MAYWEATHER AS THE GLOVES HAVE IT" By Tonton Alcos-Antogop PhilBoxing.com Sun, 03 May 2015 CEBU CITY-They are not saying it but if The Washington Post interview of Freddie Roach would be the basis, his ward, Manny Pacquiao is going for a "knock-out" against Floyd Mayweather tonight (daytime here in the Philippines). "The Reyes gloves are what you use if you want to knock people out," Roach told Nick Miroff then in September 2014 when the American journalist wrote a feature for Cleto Reyes gloves, the "hecho en Mexico (made in Mexico) gloves named after its original manufacturer, whose glove making business has been continued on by his children. This is the same glove which the Mayweather camp has protested hours after their official weigh in claiming that it has not been cleared for use by CBS Les Moonves, the fight's arbitrator. Team Pacquiao stood their ground however by telling the Mayweather camp that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) pre-approved the same forcing the The Money Team (TMT) to withdraw their protest as the NSAC decision prevailed. Well, the issue is about the Reyes gloves which is known in the boxing circles as "the puncher's gloves" because it has less padding in the knuckle area. Mayweather on the other hand will be using the U.S. made Grant gloves, also 8oz, as pre-agreed by both camps and the NSAC. The Grant gloves as a brand prides itself to be perfect balance of power and protection but Roach in the same 2014 interview added, "some guys have bad hands, so they want a softer, pillow-type glove," which probably would give the idea why Mayweather preferred the New York made gloves. Grant gloves however emphasized that theirs is not necessarily a pillow type glove, it being a combination of power and protection, which would conform nicely to one's hand, having good wrist support and what not. Mayweather have been reported earlier to have fragile hands which would made him in-sync with Grant's but consider the fact that as their branding have it, Cleto Reyes gloves, would make one feel his knuckles when worn because of its less padding. Translated simply, Pacquiao's gear is aimed for a knock-out while Mayweather premiums hand protection while still having his punching power, take your pick. Refer to Roach, who by the way added that the horse hair which is part of the Reyes glove padding works well as it flattens down and harden over the course of the fight. Let's see. My prognosis, Pacquiao by K.O. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Tonton Alcos-Antogop. |
