MAYWEATHER’S FATHER PRAISES PACQUIAO’s PUNCHING POWER
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 27 Apr 2007
The father of undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr has praised Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao who, in the eyes of many boxing writers is considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world although the prestigious Ring Magazine and others have named Mayweather as No.1.
In a conversation with Michael Marley of Boxing Confidential, Mayweather Sr who was himself a boxer said Pacquiao was “a real puncher, a guy who can take you out with just one shot. That is why they call him the Pacman because he packs a punch.”
However, Mayweather Sr said “that’s the only thing he (Pacquiao) can do well but he does it very well. He cant box. Pacman got terrible defense and he wont get better” with trainer Freddie Roach whom he referred to as “Joke Coach Roach.”
Mayweather said Roach “cant show him (Pacquiao) anything but Pacman got the punch.” He said he himself was “a teacher above and beyond being a trainer . Pacman wont learn and hasn’t learned nothing with Roach.”
The often abrasive, trash talking trainer claimed that Pacquiao’s victory over legendary Mexican Erik “El Terrible” Morales last November was “meaningless.” He said “they threw a dead man in there with Pacquiao in that fight. Erik had so many tough fights, so many wars, so much mileage on him he was a dead man walking against Pacman.”
Mayweather who recently took over as trainer of Joan Guzman who has moved up to the lightweight division to fight WBO champion Michael Kastidis on May 26 said he believes Guzman can beat Pacquiao in a future fight but stressed that “nobody should take the Pacman lightly. You cant drop your hands when you fight a guy like the Pacman.”
