TRANS TASMAN SHOWDOWN - CHAMP VS CHAMP

Qld and Victorian State Champion Darren Askew to take on New Zealand Super Welterweight title holder Daniel Roy Maxwell.

Victorian and Queensland State Champion Darren Askew has been added to the star studded Smithy Brings the big fights 9 card on March 14. Askew will meet newly crowned New Zealand super welter weight champion Daniel Roy Maxwell over 4 rounds in a (70 kg limit) catch weight bout.

Askew has made every post a winner since his arrival in the Garden City from England. He's won his last seven bouts and picked up the Qld and Victorian title belts.

Maxwell won the New Zealand super welterweight title in early February with a ten round unanimous decision victory over Ben Sisam in Waitara.

Askew's trainer and promoter Brendon Smith was delighted to add the champion vs champion bout to the March 14 card.

"Darren has been extremely difficult to place with very few in the country keen to fight him," Smith said.

"However this one has been in the pipeline for a while, we just had to ensure Daniel pulled up well from his title win against Ben Sisam on the second of February.

"Both boys will carry title belts into the ring with them so it's champion vs champion.

"We have big plans for Darren Askew in 2015 and we have our eyes on the National title so this is a perfect bout to kick off the year."

Maxwell is known as an extremely durable opponent who has matched it with some of the best from Australia and New Zealand.
He has fought Anthony Taylor three times,(Taylor was scheduled to meet Kris George on this card before George was forced to withdraw with a broken thumb.) Gunnar Jackson, Bilal Akkawy, Sam Ah See, Cameron Hammond, Nathan Carroll, Paddy Murphy and Rocky Jerkic.

"You can see who Maxwell has matched it with, that's why we want to take him on.

"It's a challenge for Darren and if he can get through this one it sets us up for bigger fights later in the year.

"However our only focus is Daniel Roy Maxwell, we need to beat him before concerning ourselves with anything else.

Darren Askew is looking forward to the opportunity of fighting the New Zealand champion.

"It's great to be on this card in front of my new home town," Askew said.

"This is a fight I'm taking extremely seriously, I can't afford to lose.

"Things are rolling well and I need to keep building momentum.

"Every fight is a building block, every win moves me closer to higher honours.

"Over four rounds I hope my superior boxing skills will be good enough to overcome Daniel Maxwell."
