THE LAW CATCHES UP WITH BONG OBERO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 25 Apr 2007 Bong Obero whose real name is Ranilo Terrania is now in the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation and is being held on a litany of charges that are non-bailable. GAB chairman Eric Buhain told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that “all of the cases against Obero have been submitted to the Department of Justice for preliminary investigation.” Buhain said there were “:many cases against him ranging from estafa to illegal recruitment” among others and some of them were non-bailable offenses. Obero had been pinpointed as one of those responsible for recruiting boxers and sneaking them out of the country without the required clearance from the Games and Amusements Board and featuring them in terrible mismatches in connivance with his Thai counterparts including Panya Prachakorn. The names of Obero and Panya as well as former Filipino boxer Rey Paciones who reportedly worked for both men surfaced several times after the GAB began a probe into the death of 24 year old former WBC Youth flyweight champion Lito Sisnorio . Sisnorio died following brain surgery after being knocked out in the fourth round by former world champion Chatchai Sasakul last month in Bangkok in a flagrant mismatch. Sisnorio who was managed by Jemmel Cantayoso was sent to Thailand by Obero. Another boxer, minimum weight Michael Rodriguez who was with his father, mother and girlfriend, testified that he had been illegally recruited by Obero and provided NBI investigators with text messages in support of his claim. Rodriguez has lost his last seven fights, four of them in Thailand. Obero who was banned by the GAB for his illegal activities continued to defy the ban and together with other unscrupulous individuals both here and in Thailand kept sending poor boxers who for a measly $200-$300 were mauled in serious mismatches. Respected boxing people have expressed the hope that Buhain means business and that even some GAB officials with links to Obrero would eventually be investigated.
