Chang Leads Opening Round Winners in World 10-Ball Elims

PhilBoxing.com

GENERAL SANTOS CITY--Top seed Chang Yu Lung of Chinese Taipei scored an impressive 9-6 victory over Spain's David Alcaide to lead the march of the favorites in the eliminations phase of the World 10-Ball championships at the SM City Mall here.

Chang, who took over the World No. 1 ranking from Niels Feijen of the Netherlands with solid form in his most recent tournaments, broke away from a 3-3 tie by racking three straight wins. From there, the stocky 34-year-old Chang never got threatened by Alcaide, ranked last in the 128-man field.

Eight of the world's Top 10 players are entered in the tournament dubbed the "Manny Pacquiao Cup," which is bankrolled by sportsman and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao. The tournament is divided into 16 groups. Four of the eight players in each group advance into the next round.

Filipinos Boots Augusto and Christian Gariando fell a tad short in their respective matches in the same Group 1 which Chang leads. Finland's Petri Makkonen edged Augusto, 9-7, while Canadian Pahdahsung Shognosh eked out a 9-8 win over Gariando. Poland's Piotr Kudlik beat Aloysius Yapp of Singapore, 9-8.

Two Filipinos won their Group 2 matches even as 113rd ranked Antonio Lining got sidetracked in his bid to upset 16th seed Wang Can. Wang trailed Lining, 4-7, but was abled to tie the match at seven wins apiece. Lining won the 15th match but Wang equalized and won the deciding 17th match.

Anton Raga beat compatriot Renemar David, 9-3, while Raymund Faraon, the 17th seed and World No. 21, easily disposed of Kamal Chawla of India, 9-4. Another Chinese-Taipei ace, Liu Chien Chieh, beat Ibrahim Amir, 9-2.

In Group 3 action, all three Filipinos suffered losses and were relegated to the losers' bracket. Ninth seed Waleed Majid of Qatar beat Jordan Legaspi, 9-6; Mieszko Fortunski of Poland trounced Demosthenes Pulpul, 9-5; and Canada's John Morra eked out a hard-earned 9-8 win over Jundel Mazon. Wu Kun Lin of Chinese-Taipei defeated compatriot and higher-ranked Hsu Kai Lun, 9-8.

Antonio Gabica upset China's top ace, Liu Haitao, 9-3, in Group 4 action and joined fellow Filipino Lee Van Corteza in the winners's circle. Corteza overwhelmed Muhammad Zulfikri of Malaysia, 9-2, while another Filipino, John Rebong, was locked in a thrilling 8-8 tie with Poland's Karol Skowerski, as of press time. Gabica, ranked 121st, blasted the eighth seed and World No. 11 Liu.
