WORLD TEN-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP GETS UNDERWAY PhilBoxing.com Sat, 14 Feb 2015 ![]() GENERAL SANTOS CITY--An exclusive list of the world's best 128 players will vie for the prestigious title when the 2015 MP Cup World 10-Ball championship unfolds Sunday at the SM City Activity Center here. The tournament proper will start on Feb. 17 when all qualifiers will be accounted for. Starting on Sunday, Feb. 15, 16 slots will be up for grabs in a two-day eliminations phase. Nothing but the best and the brightest stars from all corners of the world will be converging in the southernmost tip of the Philippines to compete for honors and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to be called World Champion. Chang Yu Lung of Taiwan has overtaken Niels Fiejen of the Netherlands as new world No. 1. He has been installed as the top seed in this tournament bankrolled by boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, the one and only eight-division world champion who is also an avid billiards player capable of locking horns with some of the best. Pacquiao has been training hard and has been included to compete. Darren Appleton of Great Britain, Albin Ouschan of Austria, representing the best of Europe, will be arriving alongside Nick Ekonomopoulos of Greece, Thorsten Hohmann of Germany and Radoslaw Babica of Poland are also installed as favorites, being in the Top 10 list of the World Pool-Billiard Association which is sanctioning this event. Dennis Orcullo and Carlo Biado will lead the homegrown bets who are coming in full force to try to prevent any foreigner from taking home the world title away. Orcullo and Biado are both in the Top 10 but anyone in the local list of qualifiers can win it all. These include legendary world champions Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco "Django" Bustamante and Ronato "Ronnie" Alcano, who will be joined by world-ranked Filipinos Johann Gonzales Chua, Raymund Faraon, Warren Kiamco and Elmer Haya, among others. A total of $300,000 will also be at stake for all the winners as the Manny Pacquiao Cup International 10-Ball Doubles tournament is also slated after the world event, starting on Feb. 22 to 26. ![]() |
