Biado-Raga Tandem Score Monumental Comeback vs Pagulayan-Valle PhilBoxing.com Mon, 15 Dec 2014 GENERAL SANTOS CITY--Carlo Biado and Anthony Raga's never-say-die spirit and their second round triumph over Canadian Alex Pagulayan and Gandi Valle have installed them as one of the favorites in the MP (Manny Pacquiao) Cup Philippine Open 10-Ball doubles event at the SM City Mall Sunday here. Biado, the cool and collected new World No. 7, and Raga, the fearless 17-year-old who created waves by eliminating former world champion Thorsten Hohmann in the singles elimination round last week, played near-perfect shot-making by coming from a 2-8 slump to win, 9-8, in the ongoing doubles matches featuring 68 battle-tested teams. Winning over the tandem of Pagulayan and Valle is no easy feat but stringing to win seven straight matches was just phenomenal for Biado and Raga, who matched wins by some of the tournament's favorites including world-ranked Taiwanese Ko Pin Yi and Ko Pin Chung, World No. 10 Chang Jun Lin and Fu Che Wei, Mika Immonen and Rodney Morris, among others. Upsets continued to rock the event as Shane Van Boening and Dennis Orcollo were relegated to the losers' bracket early by the unheralded tandem of Oliver Medenilla and Raymond Faraon. Medenilla, who just days ago entered the semifinals of the star-studded singles event, displayed world-class form in partnering with Faraon to beat the superstar combination of Van Boening, the World No. 3 and Orcollo, the World No. 5. Together, they showed the depth of Philippine billiards and marched alongside winners Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante, and defending champions Jeffrey de Luna and Jeffrey Ignacio, among others. Van Boening and Orcollo kept their hopes alive with an easy 9-3 victory over Emil Martinez and Horace Angor in their losers' bracket match. Reyes, the recent singles winner, playing alongside his best friend Bustamante, beat the women's pair of Iris Ranola and Rubilen Amit, 9-5, to set up another confrontation with finals singles opponent Demosthenes Pulpul and Oliver Villafuerte. 68 teams from 11 countries participated in the $150,000 event bankrolled by sportsman Manny Pacquiao, who was also participating, partnering with world champion Ronnie Alcano. The doubles event has a prize fund of $100,000. ![]() |
