DAVAO CITY'S REY LORETO DEFENDS IBO JUNIOR FLYWEIGHT TITLE DEC. 12 PhilBoxing.com Thu, 04 Dec 2014 ![]() Former journeyman Rey "The Hammer" Loreto, who shocked boxing experts with a 3rd round knockout of two-time world champion Nkosinathi Joyi of South Africa in Monte Carlo, Monaco last February, will defend his title in the rematch against the former champion in East London, South Africa Dec. 12. It will be Loreto's first defense of the IBO title and his second fight since becoming a world champion last February. Two months ago, Loreto, 24, stopped Indonesian Heri Amol in the 8th round of a non-title fight in his home city, Davao. Now fighting under a promotional contract with the newly-organized Sonshine Sports Management which is backed by religious leader Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy and former North Cotabato Governor Manny Pinol, Loreto has trained hard and long for his rematch with Joyi. Loreto is now based in Baguio City where he is managed by boxing promoter Brico Santig. On Feb. 1, 2014, Loreto, sporting an atrocious fight record of 17 wins with 9 KOs and 13 losses, was pitted against Joyi, a two-time world champion and former Olympian. Loreto was expected to lose but he surprised the boxing world, especially Philippine boxing, when he knocked out Joyi in the 3rd round. Joyi's manager, South African Siphatho Handi, last July sought a rematch in East London. Fighting in the undercard of the Loreto-Joyi title fight is North Cotabato's Rommel Asenjo. Asenjo, 24, will go up against another South African, Sibusisu Twani in a 10-round non-title fight. Asenjo who now fights under the Sonshine Sports Managemwent, is the former WBO Oriental Miniflyweight champion. The two fighters will leave for South Africa on Tuesday.
