PEOPLE LOVE UNDERDOGS By Anthony 'Duljoman' Andales PhilBoxing.com Fri, 21 Nov 2014 Super Tucano ? Why do people love underdogs? From fiction movies to sports to real life, people in all walks of life love Cinderella stories. Even kids love Cinderella and Disney movies. And many people love Rocky, Stallone's famous Cinderella movie. Long time ago a perfect Cinderella-man from far away lnad showed up in short notice (10 days notice to be exact) where he was going have a shot for a world crown in the United States. He eventually crushed the champion, bloodied the champion, knocked him down couple of times until the referee rescued the champion from more beating. The underdog won and he continued his Cinderella story by beating legends after legends. At one point the legends from Mexico don?t even want to fight each other because one of the legends was a master counter puncher. But the new Cinderella-man put all the legends? asses to the canvas, each one of them. Cinderella-man?s unrelenting journey catapulted him to become the biggest star in the universe, he became a concert king, drama king, product endorser, a representative, professional basketball player, professional basketball coach, dart and pool international tournament named after him, he was enlightened and dumped Catholic faith and became a pastor. You name it, he did it. The Cinderella-man became too big, now you can?t billed him as Cinderella-man anymore. The New Cinderellaman Christopher Algieri, born 30 years ago, grew up from a middle class family somewhere in New York state. Ideal American son, took up karate when he was a kid, participated in high school wrestling competition, advanced his athleticism by competing kickboxing and won ISKA KARATE championship -- still he continued his studies to make himself better and to make parents happy too. This 30 year old switched career from karate to boxing, and fought his boxing pro debut at 24 years old. He won 20 fights without a loss and knocked out 8 of his opponents with a 40% knockout ratio. In other words he is a decent fighter. Not spectacular, just decent. He beats Emmanuel Taylor and Mike Arnaoutis, most notable decent fighters before he worn out the Russian world champion. Algieri is not supposed to win against the Russian, he's not supposed to uncrown the champion. That same Russian almost killed Timothy Bradley who is the same Bradley who put a dent on the former Cinderella-man's boxing record. The mighty Russian was groomed to fight the original Cinderella-man. But this Algieri, survived two knockdowns and rallied along the way and proved that he is a smart fighter and he can adjust to circumstances. And now, the man who is still living at his parents? basement, who is still driving his Honda Accord with 368,000 Km mileage, becomes the main character of the new Cinderella story this coming Saturday night, Nov 22 2014 ET time. Algieri, should he win or not against the former Cinderella-man? We'll never know. But if he adjusted against the heavy handed Russian, this tells us that he has the capability to also adjust against the former Cinderella-man. That?s a given. The guy has education, he got master's degree in one of New York?s university. The main character of the new Cinderella story is smart and a thinking fighter. Will the new Cinderella-man have a ?live happily ever after ending?? I don?t know, but what I really know is people do love and cheer underdogs.
