ADONES AGUELO IN WBC ELIMINATOR VS. THOMPSON IN MEXICO By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sat, 02 Aug 2014 Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) super featherweight champion Adonis "Yamagata" Aguelo will face WBC International lightweight titlist Sergio "Yeyo" Thompson in a 12-round bout on August 2 at Chetuma, Quintana Roo, Mexico. This is the biggest fight for the Maasin City-born Aguelo after he lost to Aussie Joel Brunker for the WBO Oriental featherweight title last 2011 at New South Wales, Australia. Before he moved to a higher division, Aguelo won the interim Philippine featherweight title in 2012 when he stopped two-time world title challenger Jerry Nardo in the 5th round when they fought in Compostela Valley. During his latest fight in April in Okayama, Japan, Aguelo won via 8th round TKO over Hirohito Fukuhara. The Japanese prevented Filipino Jack Asis to wrest his belt when they fought to a draw for the WBC Asia Council Continental junior lightweight title in Queensland, Australia. Aguelo's last fight was an impressive win when he survived an early knockdown in round two. He unleashed furious attacks that finally stopped Hiroto Fukuhara at 1:26 of the eighth and final round in Mimasaka, Okayama, Japan. Fukuhara was hospitalized after his surprising defeat after leading on points, but he was pronounced safe though. Thompson is a deadly opponent who won over fellow Mexican Ricardo Alvarez, the brother of Canelo Alvarez, in a bout at Las Vegas, Nevada last Marso 8. Thompson currently is No. 2 WBC contender in the super featherweight division. Considered as one of Mexico's top boxers, Thompson lost to WBC superfeatherweight champion Takashi Miura in August 2013 by unanimous decision in a 12-round title fight. The winner will get the chance to fight Miura for the WBC superfeatherweight title The 30-year old Thompson sports an impressive record of 29-3 with 26 KOs. While the 26-year old Aguelo is 21-9-2 with 13 KOs. He won four of his last five bouts. Thompson vs. Aguelo, a 10-round WBC super featherweight title elimination bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Cancun Boxing.
