ADONES AGUELO FACES YEYO THOMPSON FOR WBC SUPERFEATHERWEIGHT ELIMINATOR

Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) superfeatherweight champion Adones Aguelo of Maasin City will fight WBC international lightweight champion Sergio "Yeyo" Thompson on August 2, 2014 in Oasis Hotel Complex, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico in a super featherweight eliminator for the right to face World Boxing Council (WBC) world champion Takashi Miura of Japan.

In the co-feature, former WBC super bantamweight champion Victor "Viking" Terrazas (37-3-1, 21 KO's) will face Jesus "Chito" Rios (29-5-1, 23 KO's) in a ten round contest. And Silverio "Chamaco" Ortiz (30-14-0, 14 KO's) battles Fernando "Hurricane" Castaneda (21-8-0, 14 KO's).

Aguelo is ranked No. 38 in the International Boxing Organization computerized rankings in the superfeatherweight division. He is 21-9-2 with 13 KOs. The only Filipino ahead of him is Michael Fare?as at No. 31. Boxrec.com rated Aguelo No. 47 in the world behind Fare?as at No. 20.

Aguelo, who was Orient Pacific Boxing Federation ranked no. 10 superfeatherweight, survived an early knockdown in round two, and displayed furious and continuous attacks that he finally stopped Hiroto Fukuhara at 1:26 of the eighth and final canto in Mimasaka, Okayama, Japan. Fukuhara was hospitalized after his surprising defeat after leading on points, but he proved to be all right.

Thompson, who sports a 29-3 record with 26 KOs is fresh from his win over Ricardo Alvarez for the WBC international lightweight title on March 8, 2014.

Thompson is ranked No. 2 by the World Boxing Council. He accepted the last fight on late notice and used his the powerful punches to score two knockdowns enroute to a ten round unanimous decision win over Ricardo "Dinamita" Alvarez (23-3-3, 14KOs), the older brother of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, in a lightweight contest. The scores were 95-93, 95-93, 97-91.
