Bryant Jennings dismantles Arthur Szpilka in 10 rounds in NYC
By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 26 Jan 2014
New York ? While the weather outside was dreary, the action inside The Theater at Madison Square Garden provided warmth to the legion of boxing fans that trooped the iconic venue in this wintry night in January.
Before the main event of the night that features Mikey Garcia and Juan Carlos Burgos, undefeated heavyweights Bryant Jennings (17-0, 9 KO) and Arthur Szpilka (16-0, 12 KO) engaged in a heated battle to the delight of the fans in the venue.
Both fighters took turns in being the aggressor, hurting each other with occasional punches that landed for each of them early in the fight.
Jennings, 29 of Philadelphia dropped Szpilka, 25 of Wielickza, Poland in the 6th round with a hard shot to the body which sent the Polish fighter in the canvas in pain. Szpilka recovered and finished the round despite Jennings? efforts to finish the fight.
The Philly heavyweight continued his body attacks against his opponent in the succeeding round, hurting Szpilka numerous times when he was pinned in the ropes.
Buoyed by the support of the large Polish crowd in the venue, Szpilka withstood those shots to the body and retaliated with head shots from his combinations upstairs.
But that was not enough for the Polish fighter and the Polish contingent here in New York as Jennings scored another knockdown in the early moments of the 10th and final round. A hard left hook catapulted Szpilka to the ropes which saved him from falling outside of the ring.
Szpilka beat the count only to get beaten and dropped again by the rampaging American heavyweight.
Referee Michael Ortega did not bother to count and instead waved the fight off with 40 seconds left in the fight as Szpilka looked dazed in the ring after the twin knockdowns.
Jennings improved to 18 wins and 10 knockouts and Szpilka suffered the first loss of his career.
