KONCZ DEVALUES BRADLEY, SAYS HE'S WORTH A $5 MILLION PURSE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 15 Oct 2013 ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz wasn?t impressed with Timothy ?Desert Storm? Bradley?s split decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas on Sunday, Manila Time, and has effectively devalued Bradley. Koncz who, on instructions of Pacquiao, offered Bradley $6 million for a rematch and Marquez $13 million for a fifth fight, both of which were turned down as they decided to face-off against each other for much less money, told the Manila Standard he personally thought ?it was a very boring fight.? He argued that ?as we expected, Bradley did not show anything that warrants anything more than a $5 million purse? which effectively means that he has devalued Bradley?s worthiness as an attractive opponent for Pacquiao despite the fact that he beat Marquez who had scored a crushing 6th round knockout over Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Garden Arena last December 8. When the possibility of a rematch was raised after the win over Marquez, Koncz said ?Nonetheless, at this point in time we are not interested in Bradley and are focused on Rios. Further, there are other fighters out there who are deserving of an opportunity to fight us? although he didn?t name any. Koncz may have reflected the seeming disinterest of Pacquiao in the rematch who didn?t even follow the action on television and chose instead to attend worship at a local church in General Santos City. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum himself wasn't inclined to discuss a rematch with Bradley at this point. Arum who will arrive in GenSan on October 23 told the Standard that the priority for Pacquiao right now is his battle for the WBO International welterweight title against Brandon ?Bam Bam? Rios in Macau on November 24. While he didn?t categorically rule out a rematch with Bradley, Arum said ?nothing is likely but nothing is impossible? even as he emphasized that Pacquiao has to beat Rios first and he didn?t believe it's going to be an easy fight. Arum made it clear ?that?s a very, very hard road, so let?s concentrate on Rios and then we?ll figure out what we?re going to do next.? In a conversation with Rick Reeno of boxingscene.com, Arum added another intriguing aspect when he said that should Rios beat Pacquiao, he sees a possible fight between Rios and Bradley but there was no guarantee he could work out a rematch between Pacquiao and Bradley. It probably centers on the reality that the first fight which Bradley won by a hugely controversial split decision which Arum himself was furious about, wasn?t exciting and neither did it result in the kind of financial success of previous Pacquiao fights. Arum told boxingscene.com, ?Rios would fight King Kong and so would Bradley. So if Rios beats Pacquiao, that?s a logical fight to make. If Pacquiao beats Rios, I don?t know whether or not that fight (Pacquiao vs Bradley) could be made. I just don?t know.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
