Danny Green Wants a Monster Bout

PhilBoxing.com

Four Time World Champion Danny ?The Green Machine? Green (33-5, 28 KOs) will relinquish his IBO World Cruiserweight Title, but has not retired.

Green shot down reports released last weekend that he had announced his retirement and made these comments on his Facebook page.

?I'm smiling at myself at the thought of the people who decided to take it upon themselves to 'report' that I have announced my retirement!!!!!

I'm not sure where it came from or whom, but you should be embarrassed and get a scolding for fabricating a story. Where has integrity in journalism gone??

In fact, Green said this extended period out of the ring would not hinder him and told The West Australian that his desire to fight is as fierce as ever.

Under International Boxing Organisation rules, The Green Machine has twelve months to defend his title but must make his intentions clear after nine months.

Green defeated Shane ?The Mountain Warrior? Cameron (29-3, 22 KOs) at Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Australia last November.

Green said that without a "monster" bout on the horizon, he wasn't prepared to simply hang on to the title.

"It's a wrench to give it up, of course it is, but at the moment there is not a fight that I see is inspiring enough for me to get back in there and risk everything," Green said.

"And I don't think there's a fight there big enough that's going to make the fans jump up and down and say, 'yeah, yeah, I want to watch this.?

"I've got phenomenal support but I don't want to do them or the sport a disservice,? Green said.

"I only want the fights that are going to excite me. If they excite me they are definitely going to excite my supporters.?

?There?s not a monster name out there, there?s not the marquee name out there in my weight division. There are great fighters but I?m only interested in getting the fights the punters want to see. And it?s got to be satisfying for me,? Green said.

Green, who turned 40 years old in March said at this stage of his career a lot of fighters at this level and this age have one fight a year.

"I'm not retiring. If I didn't think the option of another fight was there then I would. But this week I had to make a decision about the belt."

Green said he still trains five days a week in his gym he built at his home and is around 198lb, a little more than what he weighed in his last fight against Cameron.

In the meantime, Green and Australian Music Legend John Williamson will be putting on some ?Up Close & Personal? shows together starting in October in Perth, as they will tell their stories anecdotes and personal struggles in a special presentation.

On stage they?ll delve into their childhoods, their initial introduction into their professions, share the truth on struggles, successes and moments that have not only shaped their careers but also their lives. The audience will also be given the opportunity to ask question of both of them.

A long time tradition after the Green Machine victories was to form a circle with Team Green in the ring, and sing along to Williamson?s Australian classic ?True Blue?.
