Sharp scores controversial win over Lucas at Thunderdome III

PhilBoxing.com

Luke ?Razor? Sharp (7-0-2) scored a controversial split decision victory over Xavier ?X-Man? Lucas (6-1-1, 4KO?s) in the main event of Dragon Fire Promotions Thunderdome III at Metro City Perth, Australia tonight.

Sharp claimed the vacant Western Australian State Light Heavyweight Title to add to his IBO Asia Pacific Middleweight title.

But many ringside observers believed that Lucas had done enough to earn the points decision and were surprised when the judge?s scores were read out 77-75 for Sharp, 77-76 for Lucas, and 77-76 for Sharp. Fightnews scored the bout 77?75 for Lucas.

Lucas was left wondering what he needs to do to get a judge?s decision at Thunderdome.

"That's twice now," Lucas said.

In March this year Lucas and Jeremy "War Machine? Van Diemen (4-0-2, 3 KO?s) battled to a contentious Majority Draw, in what many believed was a fight Lucas also won.

Lucas who represented Team Australia in last years UFC Ultimate Fighter series ?The Smashes: Australia vs UK? said he was now going to stick with MMA.

"I'm 33 and I can't keep going in boxing when this keeps happening, but I'm a sportsman and will accept this decision."

Lucas? trainer Grady Stewart was very angry after this decision.

?The commentators, eemc, fight doctors, promoters, referee, the opponent all said X (Lucas) won, but the judges somehow went the other way. I really didn?t think they could do this to us again after that performance from Xavier. How can the judges get it so wrong? Something is very wrong here? Stewart said

Sharp?s trainer Dave Hassan believed there were a lot of close rounds but thought Sharp may have needed to win the last round to win the fight.

Lucas dominated the final round and had Sharp hurt, but the X-Man could not finish Razor before the final bell.

But great credit has to go to Sharp who stepped up two weight classes and took the fight on two days? notice after the original opponent for Lucas, Andrew ?Widow Maker? Green (10-0-1, 5 KO?s) was forced to withdraw when he injured his shoulder in a final sparring session with Sharp.

Sharp was also coming off the best performance of his career with a victory over the experienced ?Baby? Pete Mitrevski Jr. (23-9-1, 11 KO?s) at Thunderdome II in July.

It has been a big 2 months for Sharp, and after a well earned rest, will most likely move back down to Middleweight as his promising boxing career continues and he looks forward to his next opportunity.

In other action, former World Title Challenger Steve Wills (17-1-2, 9 KO?s) scored a split decision victory over journeyman Alex Ah Tong (8-24-5, 5 KO?s). Judges scored the bout 58-56 Ah Tong, 59-55 Wills, and 58-56 for Wills.

Jack Nikich defeated Nick Wright via unanimous decision.

Cruiserweight John Squillace scored a spectacular knockout over Gary Armstrong at 1:20 of Round 1.

Clint Hosking made a successful return to the ring after a 2 year layoff to score a unanimous points victory over Dean Cambridge.

Vinnie Caruana scored a Round 1 TKO over Hanuman Charan Nam.

Jacob Santoro defeated James Kinsela via unanimous decision.

Jamie Weetch scored a TKO victory when his opponent Jason Lord did not come out for the third round.

And in the first fight of Thunderdome III, ?Irish? Darragh Foley stopped Levi Quartermaine at 2:02 of Round 1.

Also in attendance for another great night of boxing action at Dragon Fire promotions Thunderdome III was WBA Fighter of the Decade Chris ?The Dragon? John.
