The fourth fight was an 8-rounder at the featherweight division matching Rey Vargas of Guadalajara, MX (15-0-0, 14KO) vs. Juanito Rubillar of the Philippines.

Filipino fighter?s presence was a big surprise to this writer and it?s taken in with mixed emotions - glad that a Filipino is on the fight card but sad that the once world title challenger is now relegated to fatten up records of new prospects (top photo).

Ha, boxing!

Juanito Rubillar who is now based in San Diego (49-22-7, 24KO) was again fighting when he just fought and lost last August 8th to Khabir Suleymanov of Russia (16-3-0,6KO) at Montebello, CA. Previous to that Rubillar lost to John Amazu of Accra, Ghana (14-0-0, 13KO) at San Diego last June 2, 2013.

Whoever is handling Rubillar must know that poor Rubillar is at the tail end of his career. Therefore he is in a real hurry to make money off him. Otherwise he would not allow Rubillar to have three fights in three months. It?s not like Rubillar has been winning by 1st round knockouts lately.

Rubillar fought and lost to Suleymanov as a bantamweight. Now he fought Vargas as a featherweight. Vargas was naturally bigger and taller. So what else is next - a lightweight fight against another undefeated guy?

I would not wish bad for Rubillar but I hope he has a good catastrophic full coverage health insurance because he maybe needing it in short order if he continues to fight and be beaten up every month.

Oh yes, of course he lost to Vargas. And it was not pretty! He was knocked out at 2:58 of round 4.

Breazeale vs Thomas.

The fifth fight was between two heavyweights - Dominic Breazeale of Los Angeles (7-0-0, 4KO) and Lenroy Thomas of St. Catherine, Jamaica. (16-3-0,8KO).

It was a slow boring fight which occasionally drew catcalls from the predominantly Latino fans. Breazeale dominated from early rounds finally ending the fight with a booming right hand that dropped Thomas. Thomas failed to beat the count and the fight ended at 2:29 of round 4.

Diaz vs Mendoza.

The sixth fight featured undefeated featherweight Joseph Diaz Jr of South El Monte ( 7-0-0, 5KO) versus Noel Mendoza of Phoenix, AZ (6-3-1, 1KO). Diaz kept his record spotless with a sensational knockout at 1:54 of round 4.
