MAASIN CITY CAGERS UPSET PBA LEGENDS IN EXHIBITION MATCH
By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sun, 04 Aug 2013
The Legends of Philippine Basketball, the former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) superstars, played an exhibition game with the Maasin City selection yesterday at the Maasin City Gymnasium.
The Legends, this time made up of Alvin Patrimonio, Gerry Codinera, Rene Hawkins, Noli Locsin, Paul Alvarez, Vince Hizon, Kenneth Duremdes, Rey Evangelista, Bonel Balingit, and Allan Garrido, once again came to Maasin City to play with the local talents.
Another member of the Legends, Peter Naron, opted to play for the Maasin City squad, he being born in the then town of Maasin. The game was sponsored by the city government through the auspices of the City Sports Council to add glamour to the 13th Charter Day Celebration on August 10 and 2013 City Fiesta on August 15.
The local team was reinforced by Eliud Poligrates who was waxing hot with 46 points including six three-point shots. At the start of the opening tip, the younger and fresher Maasin City players showed aggressiveness on both ends of the court.
The heftier and taller Legends displayed some flashy brilliant moves but the speed and high-percentage shooting of the Maasin selection prevailed. Plus the long trip from Manila to Tacloban then to this city took its toll on the aged ex-superstars.
Maasin City led the first quarter by a solitary point, 29-28. At the halftime, the lead of the city cagers has widened to 14 points, 63-49. The third quarter saw the lead of Maasin cut down to 11 points.
In the fourth period, the Legends rallied to inch close at 104-100. But it was the nearest the veterans could get as Maasin coasted along to protect their margin to win by eight points, 117-109.
