VILLAMOR COMMENDS MELINDO AND SERVANIA

PhilBoxing.com

Macau, July 27 -- ALA Gym head trainer and former world title challenger Edito "Ala" Villamor has commended Milan Melindo and Genesis Servania for their performance in "Fists of Gold II" here at the Cotai Arena on Saturday night.

Villamor said Melindo was winning the fight after the first six rounds but conceded that "he lost the last four" which in the end cost him.

He said the knockdown in round 11 was because "Melindo didn't see the right of Estrada because of the blood that hampered his vision" following a cut under the left eye in round six.

Villamor said they had told Melindo "to watch for the right straight and the jab. He solved the problem of the jab but didn't see the right."

He said "we are happy because it was the best fight of Milan. He was in good condition but Estrada was a great fighter tonight.

The trainer explained that Melindo "wanted to go for a knockout which is natural because he thought he was behind on points. We told him he had to win the last two rounds to win the fight."

Melindo had to get three or four stitches because of the cut.

Genesis Servania who won a 9th round technical split decision over former world title challenger Konosuke Tomiyama of Japan following a nasty gash caused by an accidental head-butt ruled by referee Danrex Tapdasan which required 12 stitches "showed us a great fight" in the eyes of Villamor.

He s aid it was "tough because the Japanese was a former world title challenger and a good opponent who knew how to fight."

Villamor conceded that Servania "is only 21 and was too excited" over his first big fight abroad in a terrific atmosphere but said "put on a great fight."

Although Villamor joined several media people at ringside and even HBO commentators Larry Merchant and former two time world heavyweight champion George Foreman who questioned the lopsided margins in the Melindo fight while others took issue with the Thai judge Sawaeng Thaweekoon who scored the fight for Tomiyama even while the two other judges had Servania the winner including Takeshi Shimakawa who had Servania ahead 87-83.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said he thought Melindo won the first seven rounds and took issue with the lopsided scorecards of the judges although he conceded Estrada won the fight and was looking for WBO president Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel and Asia Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo to "talk to them" about the scorecards of the judges in both fights.

Aldeguer felt bad for Melindo. He said "poor guy, he fought a good fight. Even Larry Merchant said he was winning after seven rounds" while Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told us he had Melindo ahead after the 8th round but that he lost the last four and the knockdown was crucial.
