Laguna Senior Leaguers off to World Series

PhilBoxing.com

MANILA (PNA) -- Head coach Lorena Bernardino and Laguna Provincial Sports and Games Development head Albert Abarquez have both assured that everything is in readiness for the province?s Senior League girls softball team from representing the Philippines and Asia-Pacific in the World Series for the 16- to 18 age bracket championship next month in Lower Sussex in Delaware.

?Wala nang makapipigil sa amin na makarating sa U.S. para katawanin ang ating bansa at ang Asia-Pacific sa Senior League World Series,?

Bernardino vowed in last Friday?s SCOOP session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura even as Abarquez assured that Laguna Gov. Jeorge ?E.R.? Ejercito Estregan is moving no stone unturned in seeing to it that the team will make it, this time, to the U.S.

?In fact, we?ll be paying the corresponding fees this afternoon (Friday) after SCOOP so our visa application papers can be processed immediately,? Abarquez said adding that the Laguna chief executive has ?warned all of us to do everything to ensure that the girls will reach Lower Sussex in time for the tournament.?

The Laguna 2007 squad had topped that year?s Asia-Pacific elimination but was not able to fly to the tournament site and carry the country?s and the region?s colors as they had to scrounge for funds needed for visas of team members and officials.

?Masydo kasing dikit ang Asia-Pacific tournament at ang World Series noon, kaya nawalan kami ng time mag-raise ng pondo,? Bernardino recalled. ?As a result, na-schedule ang interview sa amin a day after we were supposed to play our first game sa Delaware.?

With the way Laguna swept the three-team, two round series against Indonesia and Guam in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East elims held two weeks ago at the Clark Freeport Zone, the Golden Lioness, according to Bernardino, ha what it takes to bring home the gold medal.

The Golden Lioness, actually, completed an unprecedented all-Philippine ASPAC representation in the World Series after Ilolio in the Major League (11-12) and Junior League {13-14) and Manila, the defending world titleholder in the Big League (16-18), also ruled their respective divisions.

The Iloilo Major Leaguers will, thus travel to Portland in Oregon for the 11-12 championship Aug. 4-11 and the Junior Leaguers to Kirkland in Washington for the 13-14 tilt Aug. 11-17. The Manilenyas will be defending their crown also in Lower Sussex Aug. 5-11.

Bernardino assessed that the Golden Lioness? strength lies on team defense built around her battery in the persons of pitchers Gaizel Dilay, adjudged as ASPAC?s best hurler and reliever Genella Cruz and catcher Mercynell Arroyo.

The team?s big bats, she added, will be provided by the Lioness? murderous row of Angelone Maloto, Ellaine Juanillo, Meryvic Bernardino and Arroyo, who besides manning the backstop is the team?s cleanup batter.

Other members of the team are Aimee Watson, Roselene Alinsod, Sachriel Marie Amores, Martina Faye Arandez, Mermeline Arroyo, Marinella Maristela, Diana Jane Balderama, and Judie Ramos. Bernardino will be assisted on the bench by Freska Catignos and Greyz Caballes.

Abarquez and Gerardo Cantada head the delegation.
