Pacquiao invited to join UNTV Cup By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 Jul 2013 MANILA (PNA) -- Boxing legend and Sarangani Congressman Manny Pacquiao has been invited play for the Congress-LGU squad that will see action in the coming First UNTV Cup which unfolds July 29 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Congress-LGU playing coach and former PBA campaigner Gerry Esplana said during Friday?s launching of the project, aimed at providing opportunity for public servants to play the nation?s favorite sport for a noble cause, that he will be asking the eight-division world champion to join his team in the four-month series. ?Alam naman nating bukod sa boksing ay mahal din ni Congressman Pacquiao ang basketball, so para sa isang noble project gaya ng UNTV Cup ay iimbitahin natin siyang maglaro,? Esplana said. Former PBA players, like Esplana as well as entertainment celebrities have also been invited to spice up the project that will see the participation of teams from several government agencies and institutions ? the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Judiciary/Supreme Court, PhilHealth, Department of Justice and the Metro Manila Development Authority. The project, according to project director Daniel ?:Kuya? Razon, is aimed at promoting unity, camaraderie and healthy living among public servants besides further identify and associate UNTV with public service. Former Crispa Redmanizers Atoy Co and Ed Cordero will supervise the games as commissioner and assistant commissioner. Razon, CEO and Chair of the Breakthrough and Milestones Productions International (BMPI) Inc. was joined in the press launching held at the Dolce Latte and Gourmet Bakeshop in Quezon City was joined in the ceremony and MOA signing by Col. Agane Adriatico of AFP, Reynaldo Agoncillo of PNP, Joseph Cabanting of Judiciary, Isagani Obispo Jr. of Department of Justice, Mario Matanguhan of PhilHealth and USEC GM Corazon Jimenez of MMDA. The top prize money of P1,000,000 goes to the eventual champion team, while the runner up will receive P500,000. The cash prize though will go to the charitable institutions the two top teams will name as beneficiaries. The seven-team field will play a one-round elimination with the top two squads automatically advancing to the semifinal round. The next round battle it out to join the automatic qualifiers in the Round of Four where teams no. 1 and no. 2 having the privilege of having to be beaten twice by teams no. 3 and 4.
