CUELLO?S SURGERY POSTPONED FOR THURSDAY; SULAIMAN MAD OVER DUBAI FIASCO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 03 Jul 2013 The surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on the right shoulder of WBC minimum weight Silver champion Denver Cuello has been re-scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Makati Medical Center. Cuello?s manager Aljoe Jaro told the Manila Standard that he is confident the hard-hitting southpaw would be able to return to the ring late this year. At the same time he told us, he is preparing a complaint to be filed with the World Boxing Council on a number of issues including the failure of fight supervisor Peter Cusik to make sure that all pertinent rules were followed including payment of the fighters purses. ALA Promotions Michael Aldeguer who watched the title fight at ringside said Cuello ?went up the ring looking confident. He was smiling while shadow boxing and the shoulder injury was not visible.? Aldeguer said that after Cuello dropped Chinese champion Xiong Zhao Zhong in the first round he expected Cuello to knock him out but noticed that as the fight progressed he was ?only throwing the left all the time.? Meantime, WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman said he is ?embarrassed and disgusted? at the fiasco in Dubai. In an email to Games and Amusements Board boxing division chief Dr. Nasser Cruz, a copy of which Sulaiman forwarded to us, he said ? Iremember (Aljoe) Jaro asking for a 30% advance to assure part of the purse. I don't think that they paid it, and it was not in the WBC rules.? Sulaiman said ?How wrong I was to allow these things to happen. I was fooled by believing that an important Chinese TV was involved.? The WBC president conceded ?I just do to know what to do, as the promoter had never had any business with the WBC before. I have been intensely involved to support the fight as I thought that it was good for China's involvement in pro boxing.? He promised ?I will keep insisting, and we are ready now to declare suspensions and all what is necessary. We will continue enforcing the payment. The WBC never had one situation like this before in its 50 years of existence. and we will not accept this matter to die.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
