Dominant Day 2 for Pinoy Batters

PhilBoxing.com

MANILA (PNA) -- The Philippines underscored its supremacy in girls softball over its Asia and Micronesian neighbors in Day 2 yesterday of the Asia-Pacific eliminations of the World Series at the parade grounds of Clark Air Base in Angeles city.

Reigning Big League (16-18) World Series champion Manila opened defense of its ASPAC title needing only six innings in shutting out Guam, 14-0, at the forefront of the local girls? annihilation of the opposition as three other local teams served notice of sweeping the softball side of competitions in the hope representing the region in the world championships of their respective divisions.

Iloilo Province scored a double whammy when its Major Leaguers (11-12) took the measure of Indonesia, 10-6, in a victory, its second, that was matched later in the day by its Junior Leaguers (13-14) who blanked their Guamanian counterparts, 11-0.

Not to be outdone, Sta. Cruz of Laguna had the Guamanians? 14-16 (Junior League) clouters at the palm of their hands claiming 7-0 victory and, like their compatriots from Manila and Iloilo, poised to rule its bracket and earn a trip to Delaware for the World Series.

The Iloilo girls? triumph over the Indonesians moved them another game away from clinching the World Series berth in the 11-12 class scheduled to be played in Portland Oregon. Coach Rey Fuentes? girls last Monday massacred the Indonesians, 23-0, in the opener of the two-team?s best-of-five series.

Fastball throwing Hazel Anque one of the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses inserted in coach Ana Santiago?s Manila line up dominated by UAAP champion Adamson University batters, pitched a three-inning no-hit, no-run, no-error start, while her teammates complemented her efforts with 19 hits that saw the Manilenyas deciding the outcome right at the top of the first frame.

The right-handed hurler struck out all the nine batters she faced before yielding the mound to Baby Jane Raro and Mary Ann Antolihao, who finished the job, also with aplomb.

The Manilenyas, who gifted the country its first Big League World Series crown last year after in 13 years of futile participation in girls softball in the International Little League movement, peppered a pair of Guamanian hurlers with three-hits in that pivotal period, including a single each by shortstop Queenie Sabobo, second base girl Krisna Paguican and Angelie Ursabia to commence the onslaught as all three scored.

The Manilenyas seek their second straight wins today against Indonesia in the three-team, double round robin series with the team that sweeps awarded the championship trophy and the ticket to the 16-18 World series, also in Delaware.

Like the Big League bracket, the Junior League play is also a two-round affair among the Iloilo girls, the Indonesians and the Guamanians.

The Filipino campaigners in boys baseball though continued to grope for form as only Muntinlupa City succeeded in scoring a win with a 4-2 edging of Saipan in Big League Baseball.
