NBA Finals -- Spurs squander Game 6, Heat force a Game 7 By Rodene Ivan B. Cortes PhilBoxing.com Thu, 20 Jun 2013 NEW YORK -- Trailing 94-89 with 28.2 seconds to go, their title defense on the line, the Miami Heat pulled victory from the jaws of defeat Tuesday night and stunned the San Antonio Spurs with a 103-100 overtime victory in Game 6 of the NBA Finals at the American Airlines Arena. LeBron James sank a triple that cut the deficit to 94-92 with 20.1 seconds left to play, and after Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard split his charities on the other end, Chirs Bosh rebounded a James miss and passed the ball over to Ray Allen for the game-tying 3 with 5.2 seconds remaining. The Spurs' Tony Parker could have won it in regulation but his contested fall-away jumper didn't hit the rim, prompting the extra session. In overtime, the surging Heat outlasted the apparently gassed up Spurs, 8-5. "We feel grateful we have an opportunity to play a title in a Game 7. Our guys are not looking for games that are less meaningful. We are looking for games that are more meaningful and there's nothing bigger than a Game 7," Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra said during his postgame press conference. Game 7 is Thursday night (Friday morning in Manila) at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami. After a slow start where he made just 3-for12 shots, James finished strong in the fourth quarter and overtime. He ended up with his 11th playoffs triple-double with 32 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Dwyane Wade had a so-so 14 points but Chris Bosh was huge with 10 points and 14 rebounds, including a pair of blocks that helped seal Game 6 in overtime. Mario Chalmers sank four threes for 20 Miami points while Shane Battier and Allen had nine points apiece. Mike Miller chipped in eight markers. Behind 50-44 at halftime and 75-65 entering the fourth quarter, the Heat tied the scored at 82-82 at the 6:34 mark of the final period, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. The Heat made 38-of-81 field goals, 11-of-19 threes, and 16-of-21 free throws. Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 30 points and 17 rebounds, but the cagey veteran was held scoreless after the third quarter. Leonard had an excellent 22 points and 11 boards but Tony Parker missed 17 of 23 field goals for 19 points with eight assists. Manu Ginobili had a woeful nine points and eight turnovers. "We had them where we wanted, very close game down the stretch. Up two with two free throws with a few seconds to go, no timeouts. We were in a great spot. We just gave them another chance," a dejected Ginobili told reporters. (RIBC) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rodene Ivan B. Cortes. |
