Green shoots his way to NBA Finals history

PhilBoxing.com

CHICAGO -- In my 20 years as an NBA writer, a passion play that has allowed me the privilege of being credentialed to 10 NBA Finals, I thought I've seen it all.

Until Danny Green came along.

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound guard-forward of the San Antonio Spurs is stealing some of the spotlight in the ongoing 2013 NBA Finals, thanks to his deadly accuracy from three-point range.

After making 6-of-10 3s in the Spurs' 114-104 Game 6 victory over the defending champions Miami Heat last night, Green's 3-point total for this series rose to 25, easily obliterating the NBA Finals record of 22 set by Ray Allen in 2008 when he helped the Boston Celtics win the title.

With 25 shots made out of 38 attempts, Green has a flabbergasting 65.7 percent clip from 3-point territory, a number so mightily impressive given that the NBA 3 can be as far as 23 feet and 9 inches away from the basket.

It doesn't matter, because Green is in a divine streak right now that he must feel like the rim is as large as the province of Bohol.

With a total of 90 points through five games, Green is currently the Finals' leading scorer and likely the Finals MVP if the Spurs finish the job with either a Game 6 or Game 7 win at the American Airlines Arena.

"It seems everything is going right for me. I feel truly blessed. The basketball gods are in our favor right now," Green told the Associated Press in the aftermath of his recent spree which shoved the Spurs one game away from dethroning the vaunted Heat.

When I was in Miami for Games 1 and 2 last week, I had the chance of talking to Green twice, once during team practice and the other inside the Spurs locker room. I found him easy to like, humble and gracious, a steely 25-year old kid whose success is molded by is past disappointments.

Green was waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team that picked him No. 46 in the second round of the 2009 NBA draft. He was absorbed by the Spurs, who cut him twice, forcing Green to toil 19 games in the D-League. But what could have abruptly broken him has only made Danny stronger.

According to reports, Green left a voice message to Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich begging for another chance. Long story short, here he is now, in the grandest stage basketball has to offer. And he ain't just participating, he's starring in it.

The road to success is often paved in gold, but sometimes, all you need is Green.
