Board approves airing of PBA finals on TV5 By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 10 May 2013 One day after the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner?s Cup semifinals broke a long-standing attendance record at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, with a paying crowd of over 23,108 fans, the PBA board of governors has approved TV5?s initiative to telecast the coming best-of-five finals on the network in the midst of an upswing also in ratings. The team owners and governors, led by chairman Robert Non of the San Miguel Corporation group, approved the proposal following a closed-door meeting with Talk ?N Text governor and former chairman Ricky Vargas. ?The PBA found the stronger, clearer and more widespread signal and reach of Channel 5 to be more appropriate and consistent with the league?s thrust to reach out to the league?s fans nationwide, on a broader basis,? said Non. Salud himself said: ?I look at this decision as an unequivocal step toward bringing the PBA to the next level and making it more accessible to our loyal fans.? The youthful Commissioner said earlier that Wednesday?s record attendance for the double header in Game 3, where Alaska beat San Mig Coffee in overtime and Talk N? Text whipped Ginebra San Miguel to go up, 2-1, ?speaks to the fans? trust and belief in the PBA?s genuine pursuit of excellence.? Salud noted that records are meant to be broken and they are precisely ?to serve as benchmarks, as an inspiration and challenge to build on the legacy left by those who nurtured the league the past 37 years.? He added: ?I am extremely proud of our players, the team owners and club management for refusing to rest on laurels and for continuing to work, believing that for the PBA the best is yet to come.? In conclusion, the Commissioner thanked the fans and the valued partners in media as ? evidenced by their unwavering support and guidance ? share this belief and we in the PBA cannot let them down. Congratulations to everyone who made this happen.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
