AMIR KHAN DEFENDS HIS HIRING OF VICTOR CONTE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 26 Apr 2013 Victor Conte. Former world super lightweight champion Amir Khan has defended his involvement with convicted drug cheat Victor Conte as the British boxer gets ready to face Mexico's Julio Diaz in Sheffield. Khan told BBC Sport that ?the advice he?s been giving me has been brilliant? even as he clarified the linkup with Conte was done by Khan?s new trainer Virgil Hunter. Conte, was jailed in 2005 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute banned steroids, left the camp of 2012 ?Fighter of the Year? Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire while he was preparing for a title defense against WBA super bantamweight champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux and joined Khan. The former Olympic silver medalist told BBC Sport "I know he's had a bad background and has done things he shouldn't have." Khan?s defense came after the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) strongly criticized Conte being part of Khan's coaching team. Khan insisted he took only supplements of his sponsor?s brand and none from Conte. Outstanding track coach Remy Korchemny who also left Donaire?s team along with Conte and joined Khan was referred to by the British fighter who said "he's (Conte?s) brought so much good training into the game. He's introduced me to a lot of new trainers who have helped me on my running, sprinting, on my engine really, which is working my fitness, also breathing methods and telling me what to do and what not to do. He said "I never wanted to argue with Virgil. He's the one who brought him onto the team. I didn't really want to cause a big scene. I told Virgil and he said 'look, if anybody's got a problem with it, come and tell them to talk to me. He's the boss and I have to listen to what he says. He's the one who's advising me to work with Victor and I have to listen to what he says." Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
