RIGONDEAUX WARNS DONAIRE ?I?M COMING FOR YOU? By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 10 Apr 2013 Undefeated former Cuban two-time Olympic gold medalist ands reigning WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux has warned WBO/Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond Belt champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire that he?s coming for him when they clash in a unification title fight at the historic Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sunday morning Manila Time. Rigondeaux told a media conference call ?I will try to engage more than I have in the past. I want to mgive the fans what they want to see. He?s an aggressive boxer. I will be very aggressive and I?m coming for him.? Donaire reacted by predicting an excellent fight especially since he said he owes New York a good fight after his sleeper with undefeated two-division world champion Omar Andres Narvaez at The Theater in Madison Square Garden on October 22, 2011 when the Argentine refused to engage after feeling Donaire?s power early in the fight and lost by a twelve round shutout, 120-108.. Donaire insisted in an interview with boxingscene.com that he doesn?t need to prove anything because he has accomplished more than anybody and that it will be ?another day, another step? and when its over he?ll say ?I told you so.? The four division world champion said his split with Victor Conte was ?irrelevant? and if anybody chooses not to work with him ?it's their choice.? He conceded that he ?learned nutrition and recovery from him (Conte) and I have that in my head and am pretty knowledgeable.? He said ?I?m in tremendous shape, I?m ready for this fight and it's going to be my way.? Donaire complimented Rigondeaux as ?a smart guy? but noted that ?he tends to fall into doing the same thing over and over so we?ll see what he gives. He?s an intelligent fighter but a lot of things he?s going to do won?t work so he?s got to figure out something. If he doesn?t change then it's going to be my game from the beginning because I am a thinking fighter.? Asked about the recent defeats of Manny Pacquiao and Brian Viloria, Donaire said ?I just keep trying to do whatever I need to do. Pacquiao inspired me. I hope I can inspire those right next to me and make my country, my people, my team and my family proud.? The 2012 ?Fighter of the Year? who will receive his coveted award two days before the Rigondeauz showdown at the prestigious Boxing Writers of America Annual Dinner stressed ?I?m honored by the fact I?m recognized. I want to fight the best out there to see how far I can get.? Donaire conceded that Rigondeaux ?has good power and good speed as well. A guys whose faster than me is going to give me a lot of trouble. If he?s not, its not going to be a fight. He looks good, we?ll see ?we?ll find out? even as he underscored his opponent?s lack of pro experience having fought and won only 11 fights with 8 wins by knockout. He said ?there?s nothing like being in the pro game. He is a champion so we know he does have talent in this game but he?s going to doubt himself without experience. It will give him chills.? But Donaire agreed that Rigondeaux is ?a dangerous opponent being world champion in 11 fights. This is the biggest opportunity (for him) but with opportunity comes risk. I?m the biggest risk there is. No matter how fearless he can be you?ll doubt yourself.? Rigondeaux in an interview with Bill Eames of boxingscene.com said former champion Joel Casamayor who has been working with him ?has been great and we are ready to go.? He pointed out that the Radio City Music Hall has ?a lot of history? in reference to the time when Roy Jones Jr scored a shutout unanimous twelve round decision over David Telesco on January 15, 2000 but added ?after April 13 they are going to talk about this fight for a while.? Rigondeaux appeared peeved over Donaire?s reference to his amateur career and lack of pro experience asking, ?What has he done as an amateur, what as he?s done in the real world? He deserved the awards and I respect him. He?s a good boxer ? he keeps talking about my amateur career but what did he do?? The odds favoring Donaire ?could be 20 to 1. It doesn?t mean anything. I know what I?m going to do. He can fight any which way he wants. I?ve trained 100 percent. Once I win on Saturday people are going to realize how good I am. Don?t underestimate me, it's about combinations. He has his plan and I have mine.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
