SAN JOSE -- As the playoffs race heats up, the Golden State Warriors kept their place at sixth place in the Western Conference standings by beating the New Orleans Hornets Wednesday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.
It was all about guards play for the Warriors, who got a combined 39 points and 17 assists from Stephen Curry and Jarrett Jack. All-Star power forward David Lee also starred in the 98-88 triumph by notching his 28th double-double of the season with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Harrison Barnes chipped in 10 points for Golden State.
The Warriors started slow and trailed 28-19 after one quarter before turning things around with a 32-14 second quarter. Still, the stubborn Hornets wouldn't go away and crept to within 74-69 entering the fourth quarter. Sensing an upset, the Warriors quickly took control with a 7-2 run that pushed their lead to a more comfortable 81-72 with 10:09 to go.
"It took us a little while to get going. Sometimes, you've got to create your own energy," Jack told the San Jose Mercury News of Golden State's cod start and hot finish.
Eric Gordon missed 12 of 17 shots but still led the Hornets with 21 five rebounds and three assists while center Robin Lopez registered 17 and seven rebounds and point guard Greivis Vasquez added 15 and nine assists. After a promising 3-2 start, the 26-49 Hornets are out of the playoffs running.
With a 43-32 slate, the Warriors held off the 42-33 Houston Rockets for sixth place in the Western Conference. The 7th place Rockets also won Wednesday night, beating the Sacramento Kings -112-102 - at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. (DM)
