NBA -- Chandler out for a week, Thomas to miss four weeks
By Raman Sharma PhilBoxing.com Thu, 21 Mar 2013

JERSEY CITY -- After returning from a five-game road trip out west, the ailing big men of the 39-26 New York Knicks underwent testing for their respective injuries. And the results were not rosy.
Center Tyson Chandler's MRI of his cervical spine revealed a bulging disc which will sideline him for at least one week. Injuries to the neck can be particularly worrisome and should be heeded with caution. Forward Kurt Thomas, the NBA's oldest player at age 40, was diagnosed with a chronic stress fracture of his right foot and recovery time will be up to four weeks.
The reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Chandler, leads the league with 260 offensive rebounds and in field goal percentage at 64.5%. The anchor of the Knicks defense, he will be missed. Lacking athletic perimeter defenders, opposing guards too often make their way into the paint where Chandler serves as the last line of defense.
Forward Amar'e Stoudemire is expected to miss the rest of the regular season following surgery on his right knee. Forward Rasheed Wallace is also expected to miss another 6-8 weeks with a broken bone in his foot. Forward Carmelo Anthony is expected to return in tomorrow's showdown with the Orlando Magic at Madison Square Garden after missing 6 of the past 9 games with a knee injury.
It still remains to be seen if the Knicks will consider applying to the NBA for a hardship exception to sign a 16th player to the roster for a 10-day contract. The Minnesota Timberwolves were approved for such an exception earlier this year. (RS)
