NBA -- Mavs' Carter, Nowitzki too much for Nets By Rajah Allarey PhilBoxing.com Sun, 03 Mar 2013 BROOKLYN -- After a back and forth first half, which saw 14 lead changes and ended with the host Brooklyn Nets holding a miniscule 49-48 lead, the Dallas Mavericks unleashed a 29-14 run on the way to a 98-90 win Friday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Dirk Nowitzki and former Net Vince Carter powered a balanced attack that broke the close game wide open as both stars, who ended up with 20 points apiece, dropped seven points each in the pivotal thrid quarter. Dallas shot 57.1 percent from the field on that decisive period while the Nets made only 29.4 percent of their shots. Nets center Brook Lopez, who had a solid night with 19 points and nine boards, summed up the Nets' third quarter effort this way,"I think we put ourselves in a bad position. One through twelve, we did not have any energy, no energy on the floor, no energy on the bench and that is tough. I think when we (starters) are on the bench we need to get up more and give more energy." The Nets showed signs of life in the fourth quarter and used a 20-7 run that cut a 20 point Mavs' lead down to seven. The deficit however would be too much for Brooklyn to overcome as OJ Mayo, who contributed 17 points, hit a big three pointer to slow down the charge, and the Mavs made enough free throws down the stretch to end the Nets attempt at a sensational comeback. Deron Williams lead the Nets effort with a game high 24 points and 4 steals, but struggled with 7 turnovers and only 2 assists. "It started with me; I think it is kind of a snowball effect. I was throwing the ball everywhere and it is just one of those things where you see a guy making some bad passes and you start thinking about it." said Williams. Joe Johnson was a non-factor in his return to the Nets lineup after sitting out the previous three games with a left heel injury. He shot just 5-12 for 11 points and 4 turnovers and saw limited fourth quarter action. Photo highlights of the Mavs-Nets showdown at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Mavs downed the Nets, 98-90.
