NIETES BETTER THAN EVER By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 21 Feb 2013 Nietes. World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Donnie "Ahas" Nietes is better than ever as he prepares to defend his title against tough Mexican challenger Moises Fuentes at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu on March 2. The fight card will be telecast by ABS-CBN over its pre-eminent Channel 2 the following morning at 10:00 a.m. ALA Promotions patron Tony Aldeguer told the Manila Standard that Nietes is "in is best shape ever" and dropped his undefeated 122 pound sparring partner Ralph Lulu (6-1, 3KO's) with a vicious right straight during a torrid exchange. Aldeguer said there's no problem about Nietes fading in the late rounds pointing out that he had fought several times in the high altitude of Mexico and prevailed in his minimum weight title defenses. Aldeguer said that Fuentes and his team is scheduled to arrive on Friday in order to acclimatize himself to the environment in Cebu prior to the title showdown. Also planing in for the fight is former world champion Marco Antonio Barrera who twice lost to Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, the first time in an 11th round TKO in November 2003 at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas. Aldeguer told us he had invited Pacquiao to a dinner with Barrera at his sprawling home in Cebu and is hoping Pacquiao would accept the invitation and give Nietes a morale boost. The respected boxing patron said Nietes "looks good and is ready to rumble." Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. Recent PhilBoxing.com In-House articles: |
