VILORIA BACK IN TRAINING FOR POSSIBLE CLASH WITH 'CHOCOLATITO' GONZALEZ By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 16 Jan 2013 WBO/WBA flyweight champion Brian Viloria (32-3, 19 KO?s) is back in training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in Los Angeles while his manager Garry Gittelsohn works on putting a big fight together, possibly against Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez (34-0, 28 KO?s), the WBA light flyweight champion of Nicaragua who is handled by well-known Japanese businessman-sportsman Akihiko Honda. The possibility of a Viloria-Gonzalez showdown was mentioned as early as the press conference prior to the Viloria-Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez and Gonzalez ? Juan Francisco Estrada title fights at the Los Angeles Sports Arena last November 17. Viloria won the WBA title with a rousing 10th round TKO of Marquez in a slam-bang battle while Gonzalez also engaged Estrada in a toe-to-toe encounter before emerging winner by a unanimous decision. Although undefeated Milan Melindo (28-0, 11 KO?s) has been declared the mandatory challenger to Viloria by the WBO, it is obviously not a fight that could earn two-division champion Viloria the kind of purse he deserves. ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer realizes that and is willing to consider Melindo giving Viloria an opportunity to get a big fight against Gonzalez with the possibility of Melindo facing Marquez on the same blockbuster card. Gittelsohn told us should this workout ?then everybody can make some money and it makes more business sense.? The likeable Gittelsohn told the Manila Standard ?it?s the right thing to do for their careers.? Gittelsohn pointed out that Viloria ?is right now at the top of his game and I don?t want to hurt anyone but I?m simply looking for the best economic opportunity for Brian.? Viloria, in a separate conversation with the Manila Standard said he?s been in the gym for the past one-and-a-half weeks just to make sure that he ?won?t go to training camp, cold.? Viloria said that if the Gonzalez fight pushes through he?ll ?have to be in 100 percent shape.? Stating that he doesn?t feel Gonzalez will be a major problem, Viloria said ?I just have to continue what I?m doing. I don?t like too much lulls in-between fights because that?s what hurts a lot of fighters.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
