CEBU MARATHON 2013 By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Mon, 14 Jan 2013 About 3,000 runners joined the Cebu Marathon 2013 Sunday morning when it started at the Cebu IT Park at Lahug, Cebu City. Considered as the prime marathon in Cebu, it began in 2010 as part of the Sinulog Festivities in honor of the Holy Child Senior Santo Ni?o. ?Cebu Marathon has three things that make it unique and very different from other marathons,? said organizer John Pages as quoted by Sun.Star Cebu. ?First, it?s the month. We all know that this running event is held a week before the grand Sinulog Festival, which makes it very lively and colorful. Second is our island. Cebu has a very rich historical background. Third, the people. We, Cebuanos always give visitors a warm welcome and our voluntarism is very outstanding.? The runners passed through the famous Cebu landmarks such as the Cebu Provincial Capitol, Osme?a Boulevard, Colon Street, Basilica Minore del Santo Ni?o, Cebu City Hall, Magellan?s Cross, Plaza Independencia, Malaca?ang sa Sugbo and the South Road Properties. The runners of the 42K and 21K categories used only the seaside lanes of the SRP. As expected, Kenyans dominated the race with David Kipuang winning the men?s and Irene Kipchumba topping the women's category for the 42K full marathon. Kipuang finished the course in two hours, thirty minutes, and thirty-eight seconds, while Kipchumba was the first woman in 3:28:28. Each of them received the top prize of P60,000. Other Kenyan finishers in the top ten were Jackson Chirchir (2nd place), Douglas Mwiti (3rd place), Philip Kipkemei (4th place), Abraham Missos (5th place), Albert Omboga (7th place), James Kidrop Mibei (8th place), and Eliud Lele (9th place). The top Filipino finisher was Noel Tillur who landed in the 6th place, an improvement of his 8th place in the last year?s edition. Another Filipino Robert Daang crossed the finish at the 10th place. In the women?s 42K category, Kenyan nationals ruled the top three positions, with Patroper Kemboi at second and Susan Chepkwong at third place. The top Filipina was triathlete Amale Jopson who ended up at fourth. The other top ten finishers were Rhodora Oporto (5th place), Path Torremoro (6th place), Virginia Parajinog (7th place), Lizabeth Ocampo (8th place), Corazon Quiamco (9th place), and Odiza Abellana (10th place). In the half-marathon female category, Kenyan Jackline Nzivo became the top finisher while Filipinas Mary Grace delos Santos and Joy Tabal emerged second and third placers, respectively. The other top ten winners were Christy Sevilleno (4th), Lucille Ruiz (5th), Jennifer Red Sabela (6th), Geraldine Bartolata (7th), Mechelle Mancera (8th), Rochelle Tan (9th), and Virgita Soco (10th). The 21K male category was topped by Kenyan Willy Rotich who timed 1:07:12 with five other Kenyans following him in the finish. In the 5K event, sisters Lovely Fe, Jhean and Cherry Andrin finished first, second, and third places, respectively in the female division, while Jobert Carolino garnered the 5K male crown.
