NBA -- Rosy for Indy, thorny for Knicks By Reynaldo Seno PhilBoxing.com Sat, 12 Jan 2013 ![]() NEW YORK -- As the owner of the Indiana Pacers, Herb Simon signs all the hefty paychecks in the team roster. One of those checks, worth $2.5 million for the season, belongs to small forward Paul George. Simon was at the stands at Bankers Life Fieldhouse Thursday night and chances are he probably felt good about the 22-year old George, who has turned out be a wise investment especially in a challenging season where the Pacers lost leading scorer Danny Granger to injury. "Paul George is just blossoming in front of our eyes. Special performance after special performance. If he is not the best wing defender in the NBA, I don't know who is," Pacers head coach Frank Vogel told the Indianapolis Star about the prized Fresno State alum and the No.10 pick in the 2010 NBA draft, But for the short-handed Knicks, who invaded Indiana without the services of the suspended Carmelo Anthony and the ailing Raymond Felton and Rasheed Wallace, George was nothing but an annoying thorn. The 6-foot-8 George dazzled with 24 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, leading the Pacers to a hard-fought 81-76 victory. None of Indy's other starters scored in double figures but reserve Ian Mahinmi, a scrawny 6-foot-11 center, came through with 13 points and six rebounds. The pestering Pacers defense held New York to just 39.2 percent from the field (31-for-79) and 23.8 percent (5-for-21) from 3-point range. Trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half and down 49-40 at the 9:02 mark in the third quarter, the Knicks showed some spunk and rallied to take a 60-58 lead entering the fourth quarter. But that was all she wrote for the Knicks as the Pacers opened the final period with a blistering 11-2 run to recapture the lead for good, 69-62, with 6:44 left. J.R. Smith was virtually a one-man army for the Knicks, scoring 24 points while center Tyson Chandler added 12 points and 15 rebounds, With their third straight win, the 22-14 Pacers increased their Central Division lead to 1 1/2 games over the 19-14 Chicago Bulls. The Knicks, meanwhile, dropped their second loss in a row and dropped to 23-12.
