GESTA CAPABLE OF WORKING HIS WAY BACK By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 09 Jan 2013 Lightweight Mercito ?No Mercy? Gesta who disappointed his fans when the previously undefeated Filipino southpaw lost a lopsided unanimous decision to IBF champion Miguel Vazquez of Mexico at the MGM Grand Garden Arena last December 8 can make a comeback. Gesta?s trainer and co-manager Vince Parra told the Manila Standard ?He is a young man, very talented. It?s not going to be an easy road back. I feel disappointed. I told Mercito ?you are going to have to work your way back? but expressed confidence that the 25 year old ?is quite capable of doing that.? Parra said ?He needs to get his mind in the right place and we?ll get back to work.? The trainer disclosed that Gesta who is on vacation and was himself upset over his performance against Vazquez, ?needs to step back and reflect and he likes to get away from boxing, not long I think.? Parra who was with Gesta and his parents during an eight week training stint including a long spell at Big Bear in California admitted he was ?shocked? over his showing against Vazquez and said ?only he knows how he feels but he?s got a lot of thinking to do and he lost his focus.? Parra added ?I think a lot of the concerns ? things that I thought he was able to handle ? things got the best of him a little bit. He needs the time to regain his hunger. He didn?t show a lot of hunger and he needs to take a step back and that?s what I?m doing.? While pointing out that Gesta ?thrives better when the fight is brought to him? which Vazquez who fought a smart fight didn?t do, Parra conceded they were ?taking a chance because it was something he (Gesta) pushed for.? Despite the lopsided loss, Parra believes ?it was a winnable fight. It's not the fact that he lost because Vazquez is a tough guy but its the manner in which he lost ? a lot of people were wondering and even me.? Parra surmised ?I think there are some personal things he needs to work out. This is his job and I?m sure he?s working things out with his parents. He had a hard 8 week camp so he needs to reflect now and we?ll see how he reacts and comes back.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
