NBA --- Brooklyn Nets stumble into New Year By Reynaldo Seno PhilBoxing.com Wed, 02 Jan 2013 ![]() NEW YORK -- In a performance that mirrored their up-and-down season, the Brooklyn Nets played one of the worst quarters imaginable on New Year's eve and got walloped by the San Antonio Spurs, 104-73, at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. The Nets were only down 55-47 at halftime but they couldn't get any offense going in the third quarter against the physical Spurs defense. While Brooklyn just managed five points on a pathetic 2-for-20 field goal shooting, the Spurs made 13 of 19 shots in the same span and dropped 30 points. In what seemed like a quick, forgettable blur, the Nets were suddenly blown away 85-52 and the Spurs coasted to their sixth consecutive win. San Antonio, now 25-8, holds a 3 1/2 game lead over the 19-9 Memphis Grizzlies for the top spot in the Western Conference's Southwest Division. "That was an amazing quarter for us. That's not something that happens often," Manu Ginobili told the San Antonio Express-News. Tony Parker led six Spurs in double figures with 20 points and six assists while Tim Duncan added 15 and four rebounds. Ginobili finished with 11 while Kawhi Leonard, Tiago Splitter and Matt Bonner chipped in 10 apiece. It was Brooklyn's first loss under interim head coach P.J. Carlesimo, who took over the reins after head coach Avery Johnson was dismissed last week. But it was an ugly loss nonetheless as the Nets sank only the 28 of 74 field goals and four of 17 threes. They also missed four of 17 free throws and had 16 turnovers. Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson combined for 23 points for the Nets, but All-Star Deron Williams, the superstar the Nets hoped would take them to exhilirating highs, produced a lowly two assists and eight points on 3-for-11 shooting. "We are out of whack as a group," Williams told NBA.com. "Even on bad nights I don't play like this. It doesn't even feel like its me out there on the court. Tonight was just another night I didn't help.I said we had a great team on paper. I said it would take some time for us to jell. I didn't think it would take this long." After a promising start, the Nets are just slightly above average at 16-15 and 5 1/2 games behind the New York Knicks for the Atlantic Division lead the in Eastern Conference.
