PONTERAS FULFILLS DREAM; KOs THAI CHAMPION IN 5th PhilBoxing.com Wed, 26 Dec 2012 ![]() Bangkok, Thailand ? Journeyman Ryan Rey Ponteras completed a great comeback in boxing when he capped a five-fight winning streak by scoring a sensational 5th round knockout over Thai defending champion Ruslee Samo to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan Pacific flyweight title at the Rajapark University in Chonburi District today. Ponteras, 22, who had a record of 8 wins against 9 losses and one draw before he was salvaged by the Pinol Brothers of North Cotabato and included in the Braveheart Boxing Club, shocked the Thai promoters of Ruslee when he engaged the Thai champion in a toe-to-toe battle right at the start of the first round. In the second round of the 12 round championship bout, Ponteras found his range and connected with stunning rights to the head of the Thai champion sending Ruslee to the canvas for a count of eight. The Thai champion tried to mount a comeback in the third but Ponteras came back strong in the fourth and again staggered Ruslee who was saved by the bell. In the 5th, sensing that victory was at hand, Ponteras gave everything he had and proceeded to send the champion to the canvas for a full count. It was a dream come true for the boxer who used to call himself a Lastic Man for fighting in different weight categories ? from 105 lbs. to 122 lbs. ? just to earn money. The victory today was more meaningful for Ponteras because his family?s home in Santa Josefa, Agusan del Sur was one of those destroyed by the recent Typhoon Pablo. ?Now I can start repairing our house and maybe soon I can build a new house for my family,? Ponteras said. With his victory over Ruslee who is rated No. 6 in the world, Ponteras has suddenly been thrust into the world ratings and is now a candidate for the world title eliminator of the IBF flyweight division. It is no mean feat for a boxer who used to go to his fight engagements alone, traveling alone and fighting without a cornerman. ?I owe all of this to the Pinol family who had been very kind to me and who gave me the chance to prove that I have what it takes to win a world title,? Ponteras said. Since joining the Pinol Brothers-owned Braveheart Boxing Club Ponteras has racked up five victories, four of them by knockout. Photo: Ryan Rey Ponteras wins in Thailand. ![]() |
