NBA -- Melo drops 30, Knicks maul Lakers By Reynaldo Seno PhilBoxing.com Sat, 15 Dec 2012 ![]() NEW YORK-All-Star Carmelo Anthony went berserk in the opening quarter, scoring 22 of his 30 points to lead the New York Knicks to an easy 116-107 demolition of the visiting Los Angeles Lakers Thursday night at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Mercilessly pummeled, the Lakers trailed by as many as 26 points -- 58-32 -- with still 7:20left in the second quarter. The Lakers caught a little break when Anthony left the game in the third quarter due to a sprained left ankle. But instead of chipping at the 78-61 deficit following Melo's departure, the Lakers got shelled further as the Knicks soared ahead to a 93-74 bulge. "I wanted to beat them. I wanted to beat the Lakers. It had nothing to do with Mike (D'Antoni)," Anthony told NBA.com. The 6-foot-9 shooting forward, who is doubtful for New York's game against the Cavaliers on Saturday, reportedly did not get along with D'Antoni, who resigned as Knicks head coach last summer before taking over the Lakers earlier this season. Knicks point guard Raymond Felton abused the Lakers with his playmaking, rattling off 19 points while setting up teammates for eight assists. Tyson Chandler and J.R. Smith provided more pain with 18 each. Kobe Bryant paces the Lakers with 31 points and 10 assists but Los Angeles shot just 41.7 percent from the field (35-of-84) and the Lakers misfired from the 3-point line, 12-for-37 (32.4 percent). Dwight Howard had a decent outing, finishinh with 20 points and seven rebounds. With their eighth win in ten games, the 17-5 Knicks now own the best record in the Eastern Conference and just one game behind the 18-4 Oklahoma City Thunder for the best record in the NBA overall. The Lakers, meanwhile, plummeted to their fourth straight defeat. They are 9-14 and way out of the playoff picture in the tigthly-contested Western Conference. "Obviously, we gotta get our guys back and right now, we're struggling and hopefully tomorrow we can start our way back a little bit," an obviously frustrated Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni also told NBA.com.
