Cuban champ avoids Francisco By Dennis U. Eroa PhilBoxing.com Thu, 08 Nov 2012 ![]() Rigondeaux. CAN?T blame the camp of World Boxing Association Guillermo Rigondeaux for not fighting world-rated Pinoy fighter Drian Francisco, who is also the reigning IBF Pan-Pacific titleholder. Internationally-known Zanfer Promotion, which is helping Francisco?s blaze to glory in the United States, said that Rigondeaux camp refused to fight the ace from Touch Gloves Boxing Gym after a thorough review. Zanfer offered this explanation to Francisco?s adviser and sportsman Elmer Anuran. It?s clear, according to Zanfer, that Rigondeaux?s camp avoided the ??higher risk?? and opted to clash with Thai champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym (48-2, 33KOs) on December 15th at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Though regarded as a very good boxer, Rigondeaux?s record of 11-0, including eight knockouts, paled in comparison to Francisco?s record of 23-1-1, 18 KOs. The native of Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro scored a stunning first round knockout win over Mexican Jose Carlos Vargas in Mexico in his last fight. The Cuban fighter is a two-time Olympic champion. Zanfer assured Anuran that Francisco will be given ample exposure in the United States. Francisco, according to Zanfer, will be part of various television cards in the US. ??Of course, I?m disappointed that the fight didn?t happen. I?m sure Drian is also disappointed but life goes on. He is training wonderfully under Justin (Fortune) and we?ll continue to look for a brighter future. There are reasons on why the fight didn?t push through. As the saying goes, When a door closes, a window opens,?? ended Anuran. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Dennis U. Eroa. ![]() |
