Frankie Gomez stops Manuel Leyva at the Phoenix Club By Jason Brent PhilBoxing.com Mon, 05 Nov 2012 Last night, at the Phoenix Club in Sanderson Avenue, Anaheim, California, Frankie Gomez scored a 3rd round stoppage of gritty veteran journeyman, Manuel Leyva. The end came at 1:15 of the 3rd round when Leyva was deposited to the canvas for the third time and Referee David Mendoza did not bother to count anymore and just waived the fight off, awarding the undefeated Gomez, his 13th straight victory and 11 KOs. It was a fitting comeback for Frankie Gomez, now fighting as a Junior Middleweight, who showed no ring rust after an 11 month hiatus. He was just as ferocious and clinical in halting Manuel Leyva last night, as he was, in knocking out James Hope at the Honda Center in his last fight in December of last year. In the co-feature, Lightweight Jamie Kavanagh was just too fast and slick for the hapless Ramon Valadez, to pound a unanimous decision win with scores of 80-72, 79-73, and 78-74. Jamie Kavanagh had Ramon Valadez in dire straits several times during the bout, but just could not stop his tough opponent, who kept coming back. Jamie Kavanagh now totes a 12-0 fight ledger after the win, while the loss handed Ramon Valadez his 3rd loss in 15 starts. In other results, Light Heavyweights Ulises Sierra and Ricardo Pinell battled to a majority draw, 39-37, and 38-38 twice, in 4 rounds. Gerard Washington upped his record to 4-0 with a 3rd round KO of Brandon Spencer in their Heavyweight 4-rounder. And, in the two swing bouts, Super Bantanweight prospect, Joet Gonzales kayoed Victor Serrano in the very first round, scoring two knockdowns, before Referee stopped the fight after Serrano got tagged again and was about to make his third trip to the canvas. The well attended boxing promotion at the famed Phoenix Club was a Golden Boy presentation and sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), and supervised in this event by Lead Inspector/Event Supervisor, Mo Noor.
