GESTA READY TO GO AGAINST VAZQUEZ IN DECEMBER 8 TITLE FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 29 Oct 2012 Undefeated southpaw Mercito ?No Mercy? Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KO's) is looking forward eagerly to his scheduled title shot against IBF lightweight champion Miguel ?Titere? Vazquez on the undercard of the fourth showdown between ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao and Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Lass Vegas on December 8. Gesta?s co-manager and trainer Vince Parra told the Manila Standard that his fighter is ?ready to go? against Vazquez who successfully defended his title with a split twelve round decision over aggressive fellow Mexican Marvin Quintero to improve his record to 32-3 with 13 knockouts. After the fight Vazquez said he was ready to face Gesta who, according to Parra ?is ready for whatever is next. Hope we can get this fight done. We are good on our side and we heard from Vazquez side that he?s good to go too.? Boxingscene.com quoted Vazquez who said ?I feel very happy and motivated. These are the fights that I want. All I?m thinking about now is December 8 and fighting Gesta and putting on a great performance. I think it will be a complicated fight. He?s undefeated and very strong. Gesta will be even more aggressive than Quintero so I know that I have to prepare even harder.? Parra said Gesta has been training for the past three weeks in San Diego doing strength and conditioning and some boxing at the Alliance Training Center. He said ?we head to Big Bear on Thursday to start the last four weeks of our training and we?ll be ready to go come December 8.? He said they were keen on ?keeping Mercito isolated and it's better with the elevation in Big Bear.? Parra said Gesta ?is coming along great. He?s made big strides in every fight. We?ve been going the distance in the last few fights but those rounds have been helping him.? He said they watched the Vazquez-Quintero fight on television and Gesta ?liked the fight. He?s comfortable. He?s happy and just wants to get it done.? Parra said Gesta who has been fighting as a junior welterweight in his last few bouts was ?an issue we had to address but since his last fight he?s well within striking distance of 135 pounds. He?s done what was needed and is a really serious athlete right now.? Gesta sparred last week with opponents who were described by Parra as ?nice, young fresh, strong prospects and young amateurs who have worked with him and he?s already been able to do seven or eight rounds.? Parra said ?we are ready to pull the trigger when they are and Mercito is ready to be taken off the leash.? Parra described Vazquez as ?very wily and his young so he moves a lot. He is an awkward guy but there are things he does that suits Mercito very well. He is an unorthodox guy but Mercito isn?t very orthodox himself, so we feel very comfortable. He is a champion and we respect him but Mercito is excited to get that belt.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
