NBA -- Celtics breeze past Knicks

PhilBoxing.com

ALBANY, NEW YORK. With Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler and Jason Kidd watching idly on the sidelines as the NBA preseason schedule rolls on, the Boston Celtics had little trouble manhandling the New York Knicks, 109-98, Saturday night here at the Times Union Center.

Boston, which nailed 54,8 percent of its shots (40-of-73), was led by Jeff Green's ample harvest of 25 points and six rebounds. Offseason acquisition Jason Terry sprang off the bench and chipped in 22 markers on 7-of-13 shooting from the field. The 35-year old Terry, a former Dallas Maverick who migrated to the Celtics for a three-year $15.7 million contract, drilled 4-of-6 treys and 4-of-5 free throws.

The Knicks came out on fire, leading 28-15 after one quarter before settling with a 52-47 edge at halftime. But the Celtics stormed back from 20 points down and poured 62 points in the second half against the defensively weak Knicks, who sank just 36 of 84 field goals for a meager 42.9 percent clip. New York went just 8-of-32 beyond the 3-point arc and lost the rebounding battle, 39-33.

Chris Copeland, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound small forward out of Colorado, paced the Knicks with 34 points and missed only seven of his 18 field goals. The 28-year old rookie made the most of his 34-minute playing time by sinking 3-of-4 threes and all of his nine free throws. Copeland, who previously toiled in the NBDL and spent five seasons in Europe before landing in New York, also notched six rebounds, two steals and a shotblock.

All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo played 30 minutes for the Celtics and finished with 13 points and 11 assists. Kevin Garnett and Pau Pierce did not suit up.

The Knicks are 2-2 in this exhibition schedule while the Celtics are 3-4. The Knicks square off with the Brooklyn Nets Wednesday night, October 21, also at the Times Union Center. (Roel Iway)
