BIG TIME BOXING RETURNS TO BROOKLYN! UNDERCARD RESULTS FROM THE BARCLAYS CENTER By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 Oct 2012 Brooklyn, New York ? World championship boxing is back in the borough of Brooklyn, eighty one years after taking a respite. Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime Network present not one but four championship fights at the brand new Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn. Here are the undercard results from tonight?s big boxing event at Barclay?s: MELSON VS. THOMPHSON Boyd Melson 9-1 (3 KO) and Jason Thompson 5-6-1 (4 KOs) fought an exciting 6 round opener for a Junior Middleweight bout that ended in a draw. Melson was dropped in the 1st round by a right hand by Thompson. Melson returned the favor by knocking down Thompson in the 3rd round of the fight. The two fighters then engaged each other to finish the fight. All three judges scored it an identical 56-56 for both fighters. COLLAZO VS. UPSHER Brooklyn?s own and former welterweight champ Luis Collazo 31-5 (16 KOs) defeats Steven Upsher 24-1-1 (6 KOs) of Philadelphia in an 8 round Junior Middleweight bout in the second offering of the night. Collazo hurt Upsher in the 2nd round of their match courtesy of hard combinations from the hometown fighter. He hurt the Philly fighter again in the 6th round but Upsher held on and fought back against the attacking Collazo. Fans at the Barclays enjoyed that exchange and applauded the two fighters after the round. Collazo wins his Barclays debut via Unanimous Decision with scores of 79-73, 77-75 and 80-72. GOMEZ VS. BENITEZ Undefeated Eddie Gomez 10-0 (7 KO), also from this city, scored the first knockout win in this brand new arena with a 2nd round stoppage of Saul Benitez 2-2 of Phoenix, AZ in another Junior Middleweight contest tonight. Gomez caught Benitez with a devastating left hook which the latter did not survive. The victory improved Gomez?s record to 11 straight wins and an impressive 8 knockout. The time of the stoppage was 1:23 of the 2nd. JACOBS VS. LUTHERAN Returning Brooklyn fighter Danny Jacobs 22-1 (19 KOs) scored an impressive 1st round TKO victory over Josh Lutheran 13-1 (9 KOs) of Blue Springs, MO. Jacobs, who took a leave of absence from the sport for more than a year after being diagnosed with cancer, delivered a trio of crushing punches to Lutheran?s head in the initial round of their 8 round Super Middleweight match. He landed a right hook that stunned his foe, and Jacobs followed that up with a left hook and a right uppercut that knocked Lutheran cold. Lutheran spent a fair amount of time in the canvass as doctors at ringside and his corner surrounded and assisted him. The Brooklyn favorite, improved to 23 wins and 20 knockouts in his debut at the new arena in his city and in front of his hometown crowd. SALITA VS. HOSKINS Dmitriy Salita 34-1-1 (18 KOs) continued the city?s winning ways with a 6 round UD victory over Brandon Hoskins 16-2-1 (8 KOs) of Hannibal MO. Salita dominated a game Hoskins throughout the fight and in the judges? cards with a shutout score of 60-54 in one card and 59-55 in the remaining two cards.
