VILORIA LOOKS GOOD IN SPARRING By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 12 Oct 2012 Los Angeles - October 11, 2012 -- WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria (31-3, 18 KO's) sparred four rounds with tough southpaw Ray Chacon at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach this afternoon and looked good. Viloria showed he is in top condition in preparation for his unification title fight against WBA champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez (34-2, 25 KO's) at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on November 17 as he engaged Chacon in some furious exchanges. Viloria showed excellent hand-speed and movement and connected with solid combinations to the head and body of Chacon who was chosen since he is a strong puncher and approximates the southpaw style of Marquez. At the end of the sparring session Chacon told the Manila Standard "Brian is good. He is a very talented fighter, very skilled, has a good left hook which I think is dangerous for a southpaw and he has a slick right hand." Chacon has served as sparring partner for several top flight fighters including WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares. The unification title fight was formally announced at the ESPN sports bar in front of the famed Staples Center at noon with Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions introducing the fighters on the card which also includes undefeated world champion Roman "Chocalatito" Gonzales (33-0, 28 KO's) of Nicaragua and Drian Francisco of the Philippines. There were speculations that the fight had been postponed twice since Marquez was having trouble making the weight but Beltran dispelled the concern saying "his weight is perfect. It's great. He's been training (under Robert Garcia) and is looking to knock out Viloria." Beltran said they moved Marquez to Garcia because "he needed more discipline and I think Garcia is a very good, disciplined coach so he's happy there. He's very pleased and he's going to be doing a lot of good stuff." Meantime, trainer Freddie Roach is letting Filipino trainer Marvin Somodio handle Viloria. Roach told us "he's doing a really good job with him and he and Brian get along well so I'm letting Marvin handle the whole training camp and he is doing a great job." Roach told the Manila Standard that Viloria "looks great. He is coming off a big knockout in his last fight (against Omar Nino Romero) and he will definitely be ready for 'Tyson' Marquez." Roach said that Marquez likes to come forward and warned that "he is a very good counter-puncher and has knockout power. He is one of those small guys who can knock you out."
