VAZQUEZ KO?S OQUENDO, FUENTES KO?S CALDERON
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 08 Oct 2012

Former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr who lost his title to Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire the reigning WBO/IBF champion by a split decision last April 4 at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas, has scored an impressive 7th round knockout over tough Puerto Rican Jonathan Oquendo in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Oquendo is the same fighter who scored a 9th round knockout over Filipino southpaw Eden Sonsona in a super bantamweight title eliminator also in Puerto Rico on July 10, 2010.
The 29 year old Oquendo started strong but Vazquez, son of the former great Wilfredo Vazquez Sr., quickly began to control the fight and hammered Oquendo, eventually sending him crashing to the canvas to be counted out at 2:33 of the seventh round.
With the win, the 28 year old Vazquez captured the vacant WBO International title and improved his record to 22-2-1 with 19 knockouts while Oquendo dropped to 22-3 with 15 knockouts.
In another exciting bout WBO minimum weight champion Moises Fuentes retained his title with a 5th round knockout over veteran Ivan Calderon.
The 37 year old former champion Calderon, who faced Filipino Rodel Mayol twice and escaped with controversial decisions, started well using his ring savvy and quickness to outbox Fuentes in the early rounds.
However, the bigger Fuentes eventually drove Calderon to a corner and punished him in the fourth round before dropping Calderon three times in the fifth round to win by a KO at 1:22 of the round.
With the win the 27 year old Fuentes improved to 16-1 with 8 knockouts while Calderon dropped to 35-3-1 with 6 knockouts.
Calderon earned a controversial 6th round technical draw against Mayol on June 13, 2009 and then scored another controversial 7th round technical decision on September 12, 2009.
